Trump could come FACE-TO-FACE with Kim’s troops on Seoul visit amid North Korea crisis

The US President is expected to inspect American forces at one of the largest bases on the peninsula as part of his two-day state visit.

And his trip could include a journey to the heavily fortified demilitarised zone (DMZ) which separates the north and south.

Mr Trump’s visit comes at a time of heightened tensions between the US and Kim’s oppressive regime, and the pair have traded threats and insults in a bitter war of words which has gone on for months.

Since the 1980s, every US president except for George H. W. Bush, has visited the DMZ, which is patrolled by thousands of North Korean troops.

And Mr Trump’s Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was just inches away from one of Kim’s soldiers when he made the trip in March.

The President’s visit to Seoul will likely include a stop at Camp Humphreys, a major US base which serves as the headquarters of the US 8th Army.

The Yonhap News Agency has reported a senior White House official as saying the President would “most likely” visit the base 70km south of the capital.

The anonymous official said: “It’s a relatively new base, a major base on the peninsula.

“It’s a great example of burden sharing.”

The official added it “had not been decided” if Mr Trump would visit the DMZ.

The 160 mile-long border was established in a 1953 armistice following the Korean War.

And although the two nations agreed to a cease fire, they are still technically still at war and around 28,000 American troops are stationed in South Korea.

During a trip to the Korean Peninsula in March, chief diplomat Mr Tillerson visited the Joint Security Area (JSA) inside the DMZ.

The area sits directly on top of the border between the two nations and is home to a set of bright blue huts which are used to conduct diplomatic talks.

The JSA is patrolled by soldiers from both the north and south, and Mr Tillerson was silently photographed by a North Korean solider as he toured the buildings.

Hillary Clinton, when she served as Secretary of State under Barack Obama, also made the trip.

Despot Kim has continued to test nuclear weapons and long-range ballistic missiles despite widespread international condemnation.

And today, Japan’s defence minister reportedly warned the rouge state’s weapons programme had reached a “critical and imminent level”.

Itsunori Onodera told Reuters: “The threat posed by North Korea has grown to the unprecedented, critical and imminent level.

“Therefore, we have to take calibrated and different responses to meet with that level of threat.”

Mr Trump’s stop in South Korea is part of a 12-day visit to Asia which will see him stop in Japan, China, Vietnam and the Philippines.
