Lewis Hamilton opens up on taking a knee at the US Grand Prix

NFL players have found themselves in a stand-off with US president Donald Trump after many of them chose to kneel during the US national anthem before games.

The protests, started by black quarterback Colin Kaepernick, have continued despite complaints from Trump and some fans in an effort to raise awareness about police brutality towards black people in America.

And while Hamilton has previously hinted he could join the movement at this weekend’s US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, the Brit has confirmed that he will be purely focused on winning.

“There’s been a lot of mention of the whole situation,” Hamilton said.

“I know a lot of people in America so I get to speak to a lot of black and white people that live here. I get quite a good view of what’s happening here in the States and I get opinions from the Americans here about the movement which I think is pretty huge.

“You’ve seen I’ve posted about it because I respect it highly and I find the movement that Kaepernick started awesome. I’m very much in support of it.

“But I’m here to win. That’s really at the top of my priority at the moment so I’m not really focused on anything else.”

Hamilton, F1’s only black driver, had said during earlier races that he could become involved but also said that he would have to show restraint because it was not necessarily his place to protest.

“It’s not my national anthem but the issue that is in the States … well, it’s not just in the States, it is a global thing,” Hamilton said.

“It’s more focused and probably at its worst perhaps in America. I think we all do need to stand together.”
