Jimmy Kimmel Has Celebrities Read Hilarious Texts From Their Moms To Celebrate Mother’s Day

Ahead of Mother’s Day, Jimmy Kimmel put a spin on his popular “mean tweets” segment, and instead had celebrities read hilarious text messages that they have received from their mothers in recent months.

According to The Huffington Post, Kimmel and his team have been working on this segment weeks before the COVID-19 lockdown began. Earlier this year, the staff of Jimmy Kimmel Live! started asking celebrities to record funny messages from their moms so they could put it all together in a segment to celebrate the holiday.

“Moms as we know love to text, almost as much as they love to leave long voicemails,” Kimmel explained. “So over the past few months — before the virus drove us underground — we’ve been asking our celebrity guests to read real text messages from the women who brought them into this world.”

Many celebrities came through, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Emily Blunt, Renee Zellweger, Lakeith Stanfield, Will Arnett, Elle Fanning, January Jones, Ben Schwartz, Aidy Bryant, and Don Lemon.

Paltrow’s mom, actress Blythe Danner, is her neighbor on Long Island, and Danner sent Paltrow a string of messages asking to swim in her daughter’s pool. But, when Paltrow wasn’t available and didn’t respond, her mom kept sending messages and ultimately decided to go for a walk because she didn’t want to get wet.

When Arnett texted his mom to find out what she was up to, she replied that she was watching The Crown and explained that she could still talk to him because she was able to “utilize the pause button.”

Stanfield’s mother asked if he was interested in some burritos from one of her friends, and the picture she attached showed a number of burritos sitting on the floor. Fanning’s mom sent her a rambling message about the dangers of diving into a pool or the ocean. And, Jones’ mom asked her if she had been contacted about being part of South Dakota’s anti-meth campaign.
