Northampton council playing 'smoke and mirrors' with pothole damage says Mr Pothole

Road damage around the area is so severe that Mr Pothole has even threatened to fill them in himself to protect the safety of motorists. Mr Pothole said Northamptonshire County Council needs a ”major change” and a ”shake up” to fix the damage as he accused officials of not managing resources.

Northamptonshire Council’s pothole guidelines define a pothole as anything deeper than 40mm on a main road or 50mm on local roads.

An 11 percent rise has been noted by road users over the past week after poor weather and a series of UK storms continues to open up road cracks.

In January, a new report published by Northampton Council’s scrutiny committee found issues with the area’s road contract policy.

The report found financial cuts had been made to the local areas highways budget which had led to a challenging environment.

The report said: “There was general consensus from the working group, based on the evidence obtained and resulting discussions, that significant improvements to the current contract arrangements could be made to enable services to be delivered as efficiently and effectively as members would expect.

The council hopes the new technology will triple the speed of pothole reports across the county.

The new equipment could fix the damage in up to 12 minutes and will create almost zero waste which could save the council money.

Speaking after the announcement, Northampton Council Council member, Jason Smithers said: “We know that a good road system is a priority for the people of the county and we are delighted to have the opportunity to buy the technology to make this happen.”

He added: “As well as an increase in the quantity of road repairs there will also be an increase in the quality, as the road repair system will be much more efficient.”

However, the new upgrades were attacked by Mr Pothole who said the new technology would make little difference before accusing the council of aiming to generate a “good headline”.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “Nowhere nearly enough for the size of problems on NCC roads. I have been suggesting these improvements for years.

“Better than nothing but too little to make a difference. Just a good headline. To make a difference [you] need double [the] current budget.

“If you put money aside I believe they need six Jetpatchers keeping rural roads in a safe condition.

“Ten thermal units to do repairs and crews carrying faster, quicker, better quality repairs, surface dressing and complete resurfacing programme. That would make a massive difference to their road network.”
