Tadej Pogacar Triumphs at Flèche Wallonne with Decisive Attack
After setbacks at Paris-Roubaix and Amstel Gold Race, Tadej Pogacar made a resounding comeback, securing his second Flèche Wallonne title with a timely attack in Wednesday’s finale. The world champion’s strategic move on the steep Mur de Huy solidified his victory in this prestigious cycling event.
The Slovenian cyclist launched his attack with just 400 meters remaining on the notoriously challenging Mur de Huy and maintained his lead to the finish line, triumphing over France’s Kévin Vauquelin and Britain’s Tom Pidcock.
Overcoming recent near-misses, including a narrow defeat by Mattias Skjelmose at the Amstel Gold Race and a costly misjudgment at Paris-Roubaix, Pogacar conquered the adverse weather conditions that impacted the race.
Strategic Move Seals Victory
Recognizing that his main competitor, Remco Evenepoel, was struggling, Tour de France champion Pogacar initiated his attack early on the ascent, which boasts an average gradient of 9.8%, quickly establishing what seemed to be an insurmountable lead.
- Vauquelin managed to distance himself from the reduced group, securing second place for the second consecutive year.
- Pidcock claimed the final spot on the podium.
“It’s a beautiful place, but as a cyclist you don’t like it so much, such a tough finish,” remarked Pogacar, the Team UAE Emirates leader. “I accelerated and when I looked over my shoulder, no one was there. But really that’s the hardest kilometre in cycling. It’s a really great feeling, the weather wasn’t so good but winning again is all that counts. We worked well as a team today and we’ll have a similar one for Sunday at Liège.”

Adverse Weather Conditions Impact the Race
Skjelmose, considered a strong contender, was among several riders who crashed on a slippery bend roughly 40km from the finish line, amidst persistent rainfall. The inclement weather added another layer of difficulty to the already demanding race.
