YouTube Celebrates 20th Anniversary
The video-sharing giant celebrated the 20th anniversary of its initial video upload on Wednesday with a blog post revealing new functionalities, statistics, and “easter eggs” for platform users.
“On average, over 20 million videos are uploaded to YouTube daily,” the platform stated in its press release. User interaction remains substantial, with the platform noting that its videos garnered “over 3.5 billion likes from users per day” last year.
The Rise of the Creator Economy
This benchmark arrives amidst the expansion of the creator economy, encompassing millions of social media figures who generate income via brand collaborations, platform monetization, and audience subscriptions. Research conducted by Goldman Sachs last year projected the total market potential of the creator economy could potentially reach $480 billion by 2027.
Over the past two decades, YouTube has emerged as an early and influential catalyst in this thriving sector. Introduced in 2007, its Partner Program forged a pathway for everyday individuals to achieve prominence and wealth by monetizing their self-made content. YouTube’s CEO, Neal Mohan, previously stated that between 2021 and 2024, the platform disbursed $70 billion to creators, with annual payouts increasing.

Expansion into Podcasts and Television
In addition to its ventures into music and online TV, YouTube, recently overtaking traditional studios as the foremost source of TV streaming, has equally evolved into a prominent destination for podcasters and their audiences. In 2024, the platform reported that viewers watched more than 400 million hours of podcasts monthly on their TVs.
Upcoming Features and Enhancements
The platform has announced plans to overhaul its TV viewing encounter this summer with “simpler navigation, playback, quality refinements, along with simplified entry to comments, channel details, and subscriptions.”
In the coming weeks, YouTube TV subscribers will also have the ability to view multiple non-sports broadcasts concurrently on one screen, initially with a limited range of popular channels. Users with YouTube Premium or YouTube Music subscriptions can generate customized radio stations by detailing the genre of music they desire through a feature termed “Ask Music.”
