Popular TikTok personalities Matt Howard and Abby Howard are revisiting the genesis of their romance and early marriage.
In the April 23 episode of their podcast, “The Unplanned Podcast,” Matt and Abby, who married when they were 20 and 21, engaged in a game of “agree or disagree,” contemplating whether they believe they wed too young focusing on marriage advice.
“I disagree. I think it’s a case-by-case scenario,” Abby clarified. “If you suggest everyone should marry at 20, I’d strongly disagree. But we were destined to be together. There was nothing to gain by delaying it. We were already prioritizing each other as a couple and had been together for three years.”
She added, “We participated in premarital counseling, had a solid group of friends and community around us, mentors, books, and financial stability.”
Matt chimed in, noting that it’s beneficial that he and Abby attended premarital counseling while providing insightful relationship advice.
“We even had pre-engagement counseling which I think should be the norm. But your grandma questioned it,” he recalled. “Older folks hear the word therapy or counseling and panic. But I appreciate that we Gen Zers – I think we’re technically Gen Z – are acknowledging that we don’t have it all figured out.”
Abby believes the negative perception surrounding counseling is “evolving,” a change she describes as “positive” as she shared this marriage advice.
“We’re still progressing. But we were in a community where it was encouraged and praised. No one made you feel like something was wrong. The reality is, you have much to learn, and you have to learn it quickly when you marry. So it’s good to prepare yourself and think ahead,” she explained. “That’s why I disagree, because we actively worked on ourselves and as a unit. Making that decision had a lot of wisdom, and our age was simply the age we were at.”
The pair married in July 2019 and have since welcomed sons Griffin in July 2022 and August in August 2023.
