A promising high school diving champion tragically lost her life in a car accident Monday night in Florida, alongside two other individuals. The incident is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the unforeseen tragedies that can occur during what should be a joyous spring break.

Tragic Accident Claims Lives of High School Students

Maisey O’Donnell, 18, a two-time state diving champion, was spending her spring break in Florida with classmates from Concord-Carlisle High School in Massachusetts when the fatal incident occurred.

Details of the Car Crash

According to reports from WCVB-TV, the deadly crash occurred when the SUV that O’Donnell and three others were traveling in collided with a tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer had reportedly executed a U-turn in the paved median of the highway.

  • The SUV subsequently crossed the median and eastbound lanes.
  • It eventually came to a halt in a wooded area, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Victims Identified

Tragically, Jimmy McIntosh and Hannah Wasserman were pronounced dead at the scene. Shortly after, O’Donnell was also identified as one of the victims. A fourth individual involved in the accident remains in critical condition, battling for their life.

Maisey O’Donnell: A Shining Star

O’Donnell was not only an accomplished athlete but also a dedicated student. After winning two state diving championships in Massachusetts, she had committed to furthering her athletic pursuits at Williams College.

Enthusiasm for College

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to the admissions process at Williams College!,” she wrote in September, coupled with an image of herself wearing a Williams hoodie. “Thank you so much to my family, friends, and coaches who helped me get to this point. Go Ephs!”

Coach’s Remembrance

O’Donnell’s diving coach, Joe Chirico, mourned her loss, describing her death as “a tragedy.”

“The little kids looked up to her; the other divers looked up to her. It’s a tragedy that somebody at the top of their game, going to the best academic school, one of the best divers in the nation, was cut so short.” His words encapsulate the immense potential and bright future that was abruptly taken away.

Community Mourns the Loss

Following the confirmation of McIntosh and Wasserman’s deaths on Tuesday morning, Concord-Carlisle Regional School District Superintendent Dr. Laurie Hunter later confirmed that O’Donnell had also passed away.

Organ Donation

“…Maisey is in the organ donation program as her family hopes that it will give meaning to these meaningless tragedies,” Hunter stated, highlighting the family’s selfless decision to potentially save other lives in the face of their devastating loss.

Community Support

  • “We are very appreciative of the outpouring of love during what is absolutely heartbreaking.”
  • “We also appreciate the wish to feel purposeful and not helpless. At this time, it is most appropriate that no action be taken to honor the students without the full consent of the families and appropriate support for so many young people facing unfathomable loss.”

Tractor-Trailer Occupants

The tractor-trailer involved in the crash had two occupants, including a 19-year-old driver.

Thankfully, neither individual sustained any injuries in the collision.

More details to follow as the investigation unfolds.
