SAN FRANCISCO — Northwood Space has secured $30 million in Series A funding to construct a worldwide network of phased array ground stations. This investment aims to bolster the company’s efforts in revolutionizing space communication infrastructure.
Investment Details and Key Players
Alpine Space Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz spearheaded the investment round. Further financial backing was provided by Also Capital, Founders Fund, Box Group, Balerion, Banter Capital, and Humba Ventures. This significant capital injection will support Northwood’s ambitious expansion plans in the ground station network sector.
Northwood’s Strategic Vision
Northwood, established in 2022 by co-founder Bridgit Mendler, a former actress, is set to manufacture software-defined phased array antennas at its 3,252-square-meter facility in Torrance, California. The company’s goal is to develop a ground station network that provides optimal performance for a broad range of space missions at an affordable price, enabling widespread network availability, as mentioned by Mendler at TechCrunch Disrupt 2024 in October.
Technological Advancement
In October, Northwood successfully showcased its phased-array technology by establishing a connection between a prototype antenna and a Planet Earth-observation satellite, highlighting the potential of its technology.
Vertical Integration and Expansion Plans
According to a press release on April 22, Northwood aims to leverage vertical integration “to quickly develop new products and capitalize on efficiency regarding prices and timelines.” The company intends to achieve a deployment rate of two sites per month, significantly expanding its operational capabilities. This approach allows for greater control over the manufacturing and deployment processes.

Network Capabilities and Global Reach
Each location can be scaled to provide backhaul capacity reaching up to 100 gigabits per second. Northwood plans to establish these stations across six continents by the close of 2026 enabling “surge capacity, redundancy, and global coverage that contemporary missions demand,” as stated in the press release. Key aspects of their strategy involve:
- Ensuring redundancy for consistent operations.
- Providing surge capacity to manage peak demands.
- Achieving global reach to support missions worldwide.
Previous Funding
With $6 million raised during a seed round in 2024, Northwood successfully designed, constructed, deployed, and tested its phased-array antenna prototype, setting the stage for this latest round of expansion funding.
