Chicago Air Quality Plummets: A Toxic Mystery Unfolds
A perplexing air quality concern has emerged in Chicago, with reports indicating the city is enveloped in toxic chemicals. Air quality maps displayed an extensive cloud of harmful air looming over the Chicago metropolitan area on Wednesday afternoon, with readings hitting the maximum of 500 on the Air Quality Index (AQI) – the highest possible value.
An AQI of 500 signifies extremely hazardous air, where pollutant concentrations meet or surpass the upper boundaries of standard monitoring equipment.
Such readings are commonly associated with extraordinary occurrences like large-scale wildfires or volcanic activity.
While both Google and Apple users received alarming notifications concerning the apparent crisis, the news has stirred more bewilderment than alarm.
Conflicting Reports Fuel Confusion
Chicago-area residents turned to social media on Wednesday afternoon to share information from their smartphones about the outdoor conditions. Many noted discrepancies, stating that other air quality trackers indicated no emergency.

- One user posted an image on Reddit, showing the AQI in Chicago reaching 405 shortly after noon ET.
- “How dangerous is it for me and my kid to be outside today?” they inquired.
Divergent Data from Air Quality Trackers
Google Maps showed a significant cloud of hazardous air over Chicago, Illinois, on Wednesday.
One user on X (formerly Twitter) mentioned receiving an air quality alert on their phone, warning that “everyone is even more likely to experience serious health effects.”
Another X user shared a message from their son showing elevated levels of both carbon monoxide and PM10 (particulate matter with a diameter of 10 micrometers or smaller) in Chicago’s air.
These pollutants are detrimental to human health, impacting the body in distinct ways and varying in toxicity depending on exposure levels and duration.
Specific Pollutant Levels
Readings taken at 2 p.m. ET indicated carbon monoxide levels of 318 ppb (parts per billion) in Chicago’s air.
While this carbon monoxide level is reasonably low for outdoor air, the amount of fine particulate matter triggered alarms on Google Maps’ air quality tracking system.
Chicago’s PM10 concentration of 669 µg/m³ (micrograms per cubic meter) is exceedingly high, categorized as “Hazardous” by the Air Quality Index, indicating grave health risks for all individuals.
However, many Reddit users pointed out that AccuWeather and IQAir both rated the city’s air quality as either “fair” or “good.”
Conversely, air quality measurements provided by Apple also indicated a significant issue in the Chicago area on Wednesday.
Chicago’s Ongoing Air Quality Challenges
Chicago is known for its fluctuating air quality. The American Lung Association’s recent “State of the Air” report ranked Chicago 15th overall for smog levels, a decline from its 17th position in the previous two annual reports.
According to the report, which analyzed 2023 air quality data collected by the Environmental Protection Agency, “Years of successful cleanup of emissions from transportation, energy generation, and industrial processes have contributed falling ozone levels across much of the country since … 2000.”
The report also notes, “Unfortunately, as was shown in 2023, one bad fire season has the potential to offset that progress, at least temporarily, creating new challenges for air pollution control efforts and putting the health of the communities affected at increased risk.”
