Luke Littler Braces for Hostile Liverpool Reception in Premier League Darts

Rising darts star Luke Littler faces a potentially hostile reception from the Liverpool crowd, and Stephen Bunting suggests the animosity is self-inflicted. The 18-year-old, known for his outspoken support of Manchester United, has previously engaged in banter with Liverpool supporters on social media, creating a backdrop of rivalry as he competes in the Premier League.

Bunting’s Warning to Littler

Ahead of Littler’s high-profile rematch against Michael van Gerwen, Bunting cautioned him about the potential for a frosty atmosphere. When asked about his preference for cheers over jeers, Bunting explained his perspective:

  • “It doesn’t really bother me – as long as they are supporting me, I couldn’t care less about anyone else.”
  • “Football rivalries will always be a factor, but it’s a risky approach. Last year, he (Littler) mocked us (Liverpool) after a defeat, and fans remember those things.”

Anticipating a Negative Response

Bunting anticipates a cool welcome for Littler, adding:

“I expect he’ll face some boos from the Liverpool fans. Given his recent experience in Germany, where he seemed sensitive to the crowd, I don’t think he enjoys it – and sometimes you provoke that reaction yourself.”

Balancing Rivalry and Fan Support

“It’s not just football affiliations that influence fan behavior. You don’t want supporters turning against you,” Bunting stated. “I’ve experienced great crowd support in Germany, Holland, Scotland, and Wales. I aim to connect with fans on platforms like TikTok and YouTube. It’s not solely about Liverpool tomorrow night. Many will support me simply as a dart player.”

Littler’s Recent Experiences

Following a challenging experience with the Munich crowd during his semi-final defeat at the German Grand Prix, Littler expressed relief about a temporary absence from the German leg of the European Tour. However, he is scheduled to partner with Luke Humphries to represent England at the World Cup of Darts in Frankfurt this June.

Bunting’s Drive for Play-off Spot

Currently at the bottom of the league standings, Bunting has the opportunity to significantly improve his position with a victory at the M&S Bank Arena. This would mark a remarkable turnaround after a series of eight consecutive losses in the tournament.

Redemption in Liverpool

Bunting hopes for a more positive outcome than his previous Premier League appearance in Liverpool, where he suffered a 7-1 defeat to Phil Taylor in 2015.

Reflecting on his journey, Bunting noted: “This has been a decade in the making. Phil dominated me here ten years ago, and it’s been a long road back.”

“As soon as the Premier League lineup was announced and I was included, I immediately looked for the Liverpool fixture.”
