London Marathon organisers boycott X over ‘descent into gutter’ under Musk

The London Marathon is taking a firm stance, announcing a permanent boycott of X, formerly known as Twitter. Event Director Hugh Brasher stated the social media platform has “descended into a gutter” under Elon Musk’s leadership, citing increasing levels of abuse and vitriol.

London Marathon Cuts Ties with X Over Abuse Concerns

Brasher’s remarks followed questions regarding the reprehensible online abuse directed at Eilish McColgan. The athlete had been subjected to degrading comments related to her physique after sharing training videos on social media before the race.

“The abuse she’s endured is completely unacceptable,” Brasher stated. “Her resilience and response have been exemplary. However, some social media platforms have become especially toxic. Consequently, London Marathon Events has withdrawn from one of these channels.”

Concerns Over “Vitriolic” Content Lead to Decision

Brasher verified that his comments referred to X. The London Marathon’s account on the platform, boasting 191,000 followers, has remained inactive for three months. “Our decision stems from observing the escalating vitriol present on the channel,” he explained. “Meaningful conversation has ceased, and it’s no longer a constructive environment.”

  • The London Marathon believes the platform no longer aligns with its core values.
  • Brasher criticized X for failing to promote positivity.

Marathon Prioritizes Positivity and Inclusivity

Brasher conveyed that X does not promote positive ideals. He contrasted it with the guiding principles of the London Marathon, established in 1981 by his father, Chris Brasher, and John Disley, to promote community and sportsmanship.

The platform allows you to display contact information, social media links, services, and products all in one shareable link. Optional features include appointment scheduling, WhatsApp-based storefronts, media galleries, and custom design options.

“The London Marathon celebrates unity and shared joy,” Brasher emphasized. “It embodies a force for good. We felt that X no longer shared these values, prompting our departure from the platform.”

Transgender Policy Under Review

Brasher affirmed that the London Marathon will maintain its policy of excluding transgender women from elite and championship female races. However, they are permitted to participate in the mass participation event. This decision has been made in light of the recent UK Supreme Court ruling defining “woman” as based on biological sex under British equality legislation.

Brasher acknowledged the organization is awaiting a comprehensive report from the Equalities Human Rights Commission and Sport England. This report will offer guidance on effectively implementing the court’s ruling, before determining whether adjustments to the policy are needed.

Protecting Women’s Rights Remains a Priority

“The London Marathon is dedicated to safeguarding women’s rights,” Brasher stated. “Eligibility for good-for-age, championship, elite, and age group prizes requires participants to be birth women, as defined by legal precedent. Participation in the mass event is based on self-identification.”

He continued, “The complexity lies in verification. Participants are requested to furnish identification, and passports may reflect a gender that differs from their birth sex. Therefore, the counsel from the EHRC and Sport England is crucial. We are committed to both fostering inclusivity and upholding fair competition for women, which is paramount.”

He concluded, “We are committed to adhering to the law. We also look forward to specific guidance from the commission and Sport England. We are passionate about both being inclusive and also protecting in-competition the rights of women, which is incredibly important.”
