Emma Raducanu battling 'difficult moments' as Brit lifts curtain after Madrid Open win

Importance Score: 35 / 100 🔵

Emma Raducanu recently shared insights into the “challenging periods” she encountered this season, following a triumphant start in Madrid. The British No. 2 player defeated Suzan Lamens with a score of 7-6(4), 6-4 on Wednesday, securing her initial clay-court victory in over a year. Raducanu mentioned her team, including “unofficial” coach Mark Petchey and her longtime confidante Jane O’Donoghue, noting their support during difficult times. This win marks a significant moment as she navigates the clay court season and aims for continued success at the Madrid Open.

Raducanu Reflects on Overcoming Challenges in Madrid

Despite her limited background on clay surfaces, Raducanu delivered a noteworthy performance against the in-form Lamens, who previously excelled in her singles matches on indoor clay at the BJK Cup and reached the Rouen semi-final. Overcoming deficits in both sets, Raducanu audibly celebrated critical moments, displaying her determination.

Significance of the Clay Court Victory

Raducanu emphasized the importance of this victory after the match. “It meant a lot to me to secure my first match win [on the clay]. Last year, I experienced a first-round loss here and subsequently did not compete for the rest of the clay court season,” she told Sky Sports.

“This year, winning my first match here on outdoor clay in years is significant, especially considering I didn’t even compete in 2023. My last outdoor clay win was in 2022, making this victory three years later.”

Support from Her Inner Circle

Raducanu expressed her happiness at winning with her close associates present, acknowledging their support in navigating recent difficulties.

She elaborated, “Having the support on the court meant a great deal. They have been instrumental in helping me through some exceptionally tough moments earlier this year and throughout the season thus far. Their presence is invaluable.”

Navigating a Tumultuous 2025 Season

Raducanu has already faced significant changes in 2025. The 14-month coaching partnership with Nick Cavaday concluded in January due to his health concerns.

In February, she experienced distress when an individual who had previously exhibited concerning behavior appeared at her match in Dubai and required removal.

Finding Joy On and Off the Court

Currently ranked No. 49 globally, Raducanu is rediscovering happiness on and off the court, partly attributed to Petchey’s assistance, who also supported her at the Miami Open. Petchey is balancing his duties as a Tennis Channel commentator with coaching Raducanu.

Informal Coaching Arrangement

The arrangement with Petchey is currently “unofficial,” but he has aided her in relaxing outside of competitions. The pair engaged in a casual soccer game shortly before Raducanu’s match on Wednesday, allowing the former US Open champion to embrace moments of levity.

“I’ve come to realize that I don’t need to be intensely focused throughout the entire day, which is my usual tendency,” she explained.

Embracing a Balanced Approach

“I don’t need to constantly suffer or be overly serious. I can enjoy myself, have fun – I was even playing soccer. I’ve improved slightly since Miami!”

“It’s beneficial to unwind and then become fully engaged when I step onto the court. There’s a specific time and place for everything.”

Looking Ahead: Match Against Marta Kostyuk

Raducanu’s next challenge is against 23rd seed Marta Kostyuk in the second round. They have an equal 1-1 record on the professional circuit, with Raducanu winning their 2022 Madrid encounter. They share a long history.

Raducanu added, “I grew up playing with her. We competed in numerous summer and winter cups together, as we’re in the same age group. It will be an intriguing match, considering how much has occurred in both of our careers.”
