Netflix’s Psychological Thriller ‘You’ Gears Up for Final Season: Release Date and What to Expect

The chilling question of distinguishing true love from dangerous obsession has been central to Netflix’s acclaimed psychological thriller series, You, for four gripping seasons. As anticipation builds, Netflix is set to release the fifth and final season this month, promising a decisive conclusion to Joe Goldberg’s saga. Will law enforcement finally catch up to the anti-hero for his extensive history of crimes, or will a different form of retribution dictate his fate?

In season 5, Joe Goldberg (portrayed by Penn Badgley) embodies multiple roles: husband, father, and aspiring philanthropist. He hopes these new facets of his life will suppress his homicidal tendencies. Returning to New York City, the setting of the series’ beginnings, Joe has purportedly embraced his darker nature. He stands ready to leverage his resources to assist his wife, Kate (Charlotte Ritchie), in managing her deceased father’s vast business empire. However, as highlighted in the official trailer, Kate’s siblings (introduced by new cast members Anna Camp and Griffin Matthews) are poised to present significant obstacles. Joe’s usual manipulative tactics may also prove less effective under the intense global scrutiny he now faces. Further complicating matters is the arrival of Bronte (Madeline Brewer), a new woman who enters Joe’s orbit.

Here’s a comprehensive overview of what to remember from You, along with details regarding the season five premiere. Viewer discretion is advised: You carries a TV-MA rating due to its mature themes, including abuse, violence, and suicide.

Season 4 Recap: Key Plot Points to Remember

While a complete rewatch isn’t essential for understanding season five, certain pivotal events from the previous season are crucial to recall. Be warned: major spoilers for season four follow.

Throughout the series, Joe Goldberg has developed intense fixations on several women: Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail), Candace Stone (Ambyr Childers), and Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti). However, his fixation with Marienne Bellamy (Tati Gabrielle) becomes the catalyst for his relocation to London at the start of season four. Marienne, a single mother, encountered Joe in season three at the San Francisco library where she was employed. Upon discovering Joe’s role in her ex-husband’s death, she escaped to Paris. Joe eventually tracks her down during a work trip to London, but surprisingly allows her to leave unharmed.

Presumed deceased in the United States, Joe assumes a new identity as Jonathan Moore, securing a position as a literature professor. He integrates into a circle of affluent London socialites, including Kate, an art gallery director who captures his romantic interest. The situation escalates as members of this social group become targets of the “Eat the Rich” killer. Adding to the complexity, Joe finds himself stalked by an anonymous individual threatening to implicate him in the murders.

Joe initially suspects Rhys Montrose (Ed Speleers), a prominent political figure and acquaintance within the group, to be the perpetrator. In a confrontation, it’s revealed that the Rhys Joe has been interacting with is a manifestation of his psyche, a stress-induced hallucination representing his darkest impulses. After a confrontation with this imaginary Rhys—and fatally harming the real Rhys—the truth emerges: Joe is the “Eat the Rich” killer. He had not released Marienne to Paris; instead, he imprisoned her, believing he left her to perish. Fortunately, Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman), one of Joe’s students, uncovers his scheme and collaborates with Marienne to stage her death. Marienne achieves a rare positive outcome, returning to her daughter in Paris, safely removed from Joe’s reach, who believes her to be dead.

This “psychic split,” as termed by Netflix, marks Joe’s psychological breaking point. Imaginary Rhys провоцирует Joe, urging him to yield to his murderous urges, which he momentarily does by killing Kate’s billionaire father. Convinced he poses the greatest danger to Kate’s well-being, he attempts suicide. He survives and, while hospitalized with Kate, discloses aspects of his past—his real name and admissions of killing, notably omitting the murder of her father. Kate, accustomed to moral ambiguities from her work in her father’s company, expresses a continued desire to be with Joe, suggesting they could mutually maintain honesty and strive for improvement. Joe interprets this promise as an endorsement to embrace his dark side. He frames Nadia’s boyfriend for Rhys’s murder and subsequently frames Nadia for her boyfriend’s death. The season concludes with Joe and Kate together in New York, now fortified by Kate’s inherited wealth and influence—and more perilous than ever before.
