Kristen Kish Returns to Top Chef as Host and Launches New Soju Line
Celebrated chef Kristen Kish, winner of Top Chef Season 10, made a surprising return to the culinary competition, not as a contestant, but as the new host for Season 21. Alongside esteemed judges Gail Simmons and Tom Colicchio, Kish’s homecoming felt both recognizable and novel. “It was familiar yet simultaneously very new,” Kish commented regarding her experience, acknowledging the blend of comfort and unfamiliarity in her revisited role. Beyond her hosting duties, Kish, a passionate advocate for Korean American representation, has also unveiled a personal project: her own line of soju, Kish Apéritif.
From Top Chef Champion to Host
Since her victory in 2012, Kish has broadened her professional scope beyond the kitchen. Her latest venture sees her stepping into the host role on Top Chef, a position she embraced with a mix of nostalgia and anticipation. Reflecting on her journey back to the show, Kish described it as “as comfortable and familiar as something so uncomfortable and unfamiliar can be,” highlighting the unique dynamic of returning in a different capacity.
Kish Apéritif: A Personal Soju Collection
Driven by her dedication to celebrating her Korean American heritage, Kish has partnered to create Kish Apéritif, a soju line that reflects her personal narrative. “Bridging my identity as a Korean American with Korean American businesses and individuals is something I’m deeply passionate about,” Kish explained. This enthusiasm led her to enthusiastically embrace the opportunity to develop her signature soju.
Flavors Inspired by Life Experiences
The Kish Apéritif collection features four distinct soju flavors, each carefully crafted to represent significant moments and taste preferences throughout Kish’s life. According to Kish, these unique blends “are based on different points in my life and different flavor profiles that I am excited about,” offering a taste of her personal journey.
Embracing Korean Identity
As an adoptee, Kish emphasizes the significance of exploring her Korean identity through connection and collaboration. “Because I was adopted, I’m learning what it means to be Korean to me by way of others,” she shared. “That’s why being able to partner with a Korean brand and founder was such a meaningful opportunity,” underscoring the personal importance of this collaboration.
