Titans to Retain Top Pick in NFL Draft, Likely to Select Cam Ward

The Tennessee Titans have reportedly decided against trading their coveted No. 1 overall selection in the upcoming NFL Draft on Thursday. Despite fielding interest from other teams, the franchise, under the direction of new General Manager Mike Borgonzi, who was appointed in January, will reportedly maintain possession of the highly sought-after pick.

Decision Confirmed: No Trade for Top Draft Choice

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Titans will hold onto their No. 1 pick for Thursday’s draft. All indications strongly suggest they are poised to draft quarterback prospect Cam Ward. Regarding potential trade offers for the pick, Rapoport cited a source stating, ‘They never opened the door,’ implying the Titans were resolute in their intention to keep the selection.

Earlier Speculation and Ward’s Hint

General Manager Borgonzi had previously commented in late March that ‘everything is still on the table’ concerning their draft strategy. This statement suggested a willingness to consider various options, including a trade. However, speculation about the Titans’ draft intentions intensified when Cam Ward seemingly hinted at joining the team. Last week, during a video game livestream, Ward appeared to confirm his impending move to Tennessee.

Ward Fuels Draft Speculation

When questioned about his preferred NFL running backs, the 22-year-old quarterback casually mentioned Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears, both prominent players for the Titans. Furthermore, when asked about his favorite wide receivers, Ward named Treylon Burks and Calvin Ridley, also current Titans teammates.

Ward Expected at NFL Draft in Green Bay

The former quarterback from Miami, who also played for Incarnate Word and Washington State during his college career, is expected to be present in Green Bay on Thursday for the NFL Draft event. Other notable quarterbacks anticipated to attend include Jaxson Dart from Ole Miss and Jalen Milroe from Alabama. Shedeur Sanders of Colorado, however, is reportedly choosing to skip the event.

Titans’ Draft Position and Quarterback Needs

The Titans secured the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft following a disappointing 3-14 season last year. In 2023, second-round draft pick Will Levis began the season as the starting quarterback, playing in 12 games. However, he struggled with ball security, throwing 12 interceptions and losing six fumbles. Mason Rudolph also started five games for Tennessee at quarterback, throwing nine interceptions and nine touchdowns.

Upcoming Season and Opponents

While specific dates are yet to be finalized, the Tennessee Titans, presumably with Ward at quarterback, are scheduled to face challenging matchups against teams like the Chiefs, Chargers, Rams, and 49ers in the upcoming season.
