Duolingo Diversifies Learning Platform with Launch of Chess Course

The popular language learning application Duolingo is expanding its educational offerings to include a new discipline: chess. Users will soon be able to utilize the platform to acquire strategic thinking and chess skills, adding to Duolingo’s repertoire of diverse subjects.

Interactive Lessons for Chess Beginners and Enthusiasts

Duolingo’s chess course employs engaging, bite-sized puzzles designed to teach the fundamental elements of the game. These puzzles will guide users through core chess concepts, such as the knight’s unique movement pattern and basic checkmating techniques. Learners can practice by navigating digital knights to designated squares and achieving checkmate against computer-controlled kings in corner positions.

Beyond puzzles, the course will also feature opportunities to engage in “mini-matches” and complete chess games against Duolingo’s virtual coach, Oscar. This interactive approach aims to provide a comprehensive and enjoyable learning experience for users of varying skill levels.

Accessible Chess Education for a Broad Audience

According to Duolingo product manager Edwin Bodge, the primary objective in developing the chess course was to “render chess as universally accessible as possible.” In a recent demonstration, the course appeared user-friendly and potentially highly engaging. Lessons are structured to accommodate a wide spectrum of abilities, enabling individuals with varying levels of prior chess knowledge to participate effectively.

Expanding Beyond Language: New Skill Domains on Duolingo

Chess joins other non-language subjects already available on Duolingo, including music and mathematics. When questioned about potential expansion into further game-based courses, software engineer Sammi Siegel indicated that while no immediate plans are confirmed, the company will assess the success of the chess course launch before committing to additional ventures in this area. This suggests a measured approach to incorporating new skill domains into the Duolingo platform.

vCard QR Code

vCard.red is a free platform for creating a mobile-friendly digital business cards. You can easily create a vCard and generate a QR code for it, allowing others to scan and save your contact details instantly.

The platform allows you to display contact information, social media links, services, and products all in one shareable link. Optional features include appointment scheduling, WhatsApp-based storefronts, media galleries, and custom design options.

Beta Testing and Phased Rollout

Initial Launch on iOS in English

The chess course is initially being released as a beta version on iOS devices and in English, as confirmed by Duolingo’s PR director, Monica Earle. Over the forthcoming weeks, it is anticipated that access will broaden to encompass more iOS users.

Future Availability on Android and in Multiple Languages

Following the initial iOS beta phase, Duolingo intends to extend the chess course to Android platforms and subsequently make it available in multiple languages. This phased rollout strategy suggests a commitment to refining the course based on user feedback before wider distribution.
