A British climber has sustained severe injuries, including partial paralysis, following a significant accident involving a large rockfall in Mallorca, Spain. The incident occurred during a rock climbing activity on the island, leading to substantial injuries and prompting a community fundraising effort to support his extensive recovery.

British Climber Severely Injured in Spain Rockfall Accident

Aaron Nattrass, a climber from Britain, was engaged in rock climbing on the Spanish island of Mallorca on April 12 when impacted by a substantial rock. The immense boulder, reportedly weighing over 40lbs, plummeted approximately 130 feet, striking the Briton directly and causing severe damage to his elbow and pelvis.

Those close to Mr. Nattrass commented that he is fortunate to have survived the incident, highlighting that the falling rock narrowly avoided his head.

Injuries and Prognosis

Mr. Nattrass underwent surgical procedures last week aimed at repairing his elbow. However, according to updates from friends, the prospects for recovery of full function in his right arm are currently uncertain, with the outlook described as challenging.

Recovery and Support Needed

Beyond the elbow injury, a fracture to his pelvis may also necessitate surgical intervention. The expected recovery period following the pelvic injury is estimated to be at least six to seven months, requiring intensive physical therapy.

Friends expressed profound relief for his survival acknowledging the severity of the event. Being independently employed, and navigating administrative matters in Spain, he is expected to receive minimal official support during what will be a significantly difficult time.

Community Support and Fundraising

To assist Mr. Nattrass financially throughout his recovery, a fundraising initiative has been established online. The appeal has currently accumulated 3,280 euros towards a target of 4,000 euros.

Recent Climbing Incidents in Spain

This unfortunate event follows another climbing-related fatality in Spain just a few months prior. In a separate incident on December 11, 2024, a 20-year-old British man died after falling on a mountain near the village of El Chorro. The tragedy occurred in an area known as Puente del Mono (Monkey Bridge).

Emergency responders, arriving by helicopter to the mountains near Malaga, found the young man unconscious and already in cardiac arrest. Police attempted a rescue by winching him from the rock face, but he was later pronounced deceased. That incident took place on a route near the widely known Caminito del Rey path.
