Lisa Rinna Opens Up About ‘Horrible’ Postpartum Depression
Reality television personality Lisa Rinna is sharing details about the intense postpartum depression she experienced after starting her family with husband Harry Hamlin. The former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (RHOBH) star, 61, recently made headlines at the 2025 Fashion Trust U.S. Awards. She addressed the challenging period on a recent episode of their podcast, Let’s Not Talk About The Husband, highlighting the impact of postpartum depression on mothers and families.
Recounting a Difficult Period
Rinna and Hamlin married in 1997 and have two daughters, Delilah, 26, and Amelia, 23.
During the podcast discussion, Hamlin recalled a time when Rinna, battling the condition after Amelia’s birth, threatened him.
Lisa explained that she suffered from ‘horrible’ postpartum depression following the arrival of both children, admitting, ‘I didn’t know it. I didn’t understand what it was. As a first-time mother, you are often unaware of the signs and symptoms.’
The Depth of Despair
The media personality experienced postpartum depression for approximately 15 months after Delilah’s birth, confessing to feelings of ‘absolute hopelessness.’

However, she noted that her postpartum depression intensified after Amelia was born in 2001.
Harry recounted the severity of the situation, stating, ‘You said, “I’m going to kill you.” And I responded, “You need to call your OB-GYN immediately.” You also said, “You better watch out. I feel like killing you,” and “Keep the knives locked away.”‘
While Lisa did not remember uttering those specific threats, the reality star acknowledged the intensity of her mental state at the time. ‘I was experiencing terrifying hallucinations of harming people,’ she shared.
‘I felt it necessary to remove knives from the house. I was also plagued by disturbing visions of driving a car into a wall.’
She clarified that these distressing thoughts were never directed towards her children.
‘My horrific visions and deepest depression were not about harming the babies in any manner,’ Rinna emphasized on the podcast. ‘It was about utter hopelessness, severe depression, and these awful visions, hallucinations.’
‘Looking back, I realize I was completely psychotic,’ the Melrose Place alum added. She revealed that antidepressant medication proved to be ‘transformative’ in her recovery.
Previous Discussions on Postpartum Struggles
Lisa previously spoken publicly about her battles with postpartum depression in an interview with Cosmopolitan in early 2024.
‘I suffered from postpartum depression, and it completely diminished my energy and drive,’ she revealed to the publication.
‘For the first 15 months of Delilah’s life, I was unaware of my condition. Once diagnosed, I received treatment and felt prepared when Amelia arrived. Antidepressants were immensely helpful.’
Rinna continued, ‘Without medication, I am unsure how long my suffering would have persisted. I am typically a positive and joyful individual, yet I felt utterly hopeless, a frightening experience unlike anything I had ever encountered.’
Understanding Postpartum Depression
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), postpartum depression ‘affects approximately 1 in 7 individuals during pregnancy or within the first year after childbirth.’
Celebrating 28 Years of Marriage
Last month, in March, Lisa and Harry marked their 28th wedding anniversary, with the reality star celebrating the milestone on her Instagram account.
She shared black and white photographs from their wedding day, captioning the post: ’28 years ago we said I Do ❤️ March 29, 1997.’
One photograph captured the Hollywood couple beaming as they walked down the aisle after exchanging vows.
Another image, taken from behind Rinna, showcased her long, flowing veil.
Delilah commented on the post, ‘Awww mom. Nana looks so beautiful too.’
Secrets to a Lasting Marriage
Rinna and Hamlin have previously shared insights into their relationship and the factors contributing to their enduring marriage.
‘I believe a significant part of it is luck,’ Lisa told People last year regarding their long-lasting romance. ‘I genuinely think it’s luck. Because who could have predicted? We genuinely love and respect each other, which certainly helps.’
She added, ‘And I genuinely appreciate him as a person. I think he’s a truly good man, and I feel incredibly fortunate. However, finding someone you wish to spend so much time with is undoubtedly challenging, isn’t it?’
The actress then confessed to the outlet, ‘I don’t believe there’s any definitive secret. I simply think we were incredibly fortunate to find each other.’
Navigating RHOBH and Marriage
During a recent interview, Hamlin also discussed their marriage and how it remained strong throughout Rinna’s time on RHOBH.
Rinna was a main cast member on the Bravo reality series from 2014 until her departure in 2022.
‘We have always had a wonderful relationship; it was never tested during the Housewives period,’ Hamlin stated.
He humorously added that he now ‘gets a new wife every day’ due to Lisa’s varied wardrobe and wigs.
‘I recently appeared on Andy Cohen’s WWHL with Kyle Richards, and I asked Kyle, “How many of the Housewives are actually housewives?”‘ Hamlin recalled.
He mentioned that Richards indicated that her castmates were not truly ‘Housewives.’ Harry then joked, ‘We got out just in the nick of time.’
Opposites Attract
In a prior interview before their 25th anniversary, Hamlin shared another perspective on their marital success: ‘[The secret is] being diametrically opposite.’
‘I enjoy going to the mountains, while her idea of camping is anything above the 10th floor of the Four Seasons.’
