Grace Season Five Episode Three: “Need You Dead” – Twists and Turns in ITV Drama

The latest instalment of ITV’s crime drama, Grace, continued Sunday evening with the broadcast of season five, episode three, titled “Need You Dead.” The episode plunged viewers into a complex murder investigation led by Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, portrayed by John Simm, and Detective Sergeant Glen Branson, played by Richie Campbell.

Intriguing Case and Rising Suspicions

This week’s Grace episode presented DS Roy Grace and DS Glen Branson with a perplexing case: the homicide of a woman named Hannah. Initially appearing as a burglary gone awry, the detectives soon uncovered evidence suggesting Hannah was the intended victim of a deliberate attack. As the investigation progressed, suspicion began to fall upon DC Nick Nicholl, played by Brad Morrison.

Grace and Branson’s inquiries revealed that a firearm had been anonymously surrendered to an officer, coinciding with Nick’s increasingly erratic conduct. These clues hinted at a potential connection between Nicholl and the Benchdale Organised Crime Group (OCG), a notorious local criminal organisation.

Return of a Familiar Face Adds Complexity

Heightening the tension was the reappearance of Assistant Chief Constable Cassian Pewe. A recurring character with a tangled history with Roy Grace, Cassian, initially played by James D’Arcy and subsequently by Sam Hoare, has been a presence since the early seasons. Notably, he had previously attempted to implicate Roy in the disappearance of his wife, Sandy. Despite their strained relationship, Grace and Pewe had recently found a way to cooperate professionally.

Dramatic Confessions and Shocking Revelations

DC Nick’s unusual behaviour was eventually attributed to personal turmoil, as he confessed to marital breakdown and being evicted from his home.

However, the narrative took a dramatic turn with the exposure of ACC Cassian Pewe’s clandestine sabotage of the investigation. Pewe was not only revealed to be assisting the Benchdale OCG but also to have committed several murders, including Hannah’s, to safeguard himself and the gang. Following a tense confrontation, Roy Grace apprehended Cassian, but the most significant bombshell was yet to come.

During interrogation, Cassian disclosed a past romantic entanglement with Roy’s deceased wife, Sandy, prior to her vanishing and presumed death. He explained that Sandy was deeply indebted to the Benchdale OCG and pregnant. Fearing for her safety, Cassian facilitated her disappearance, providing her with a new identity. Sandy had promised to make contact once she reached safety, but she never did. Presuming the worst, Cassian’s grief morphed into resentment, leading him to suspect Roy of murder.

Unforeseen Twists and Viewer Speculation

Following Sandy’s apparent suicide, the criminal organisation pursued Cassian for her outstanding debts. To protect himself, he began collaborating with them. When Hannah stumbled upon his illicit activities, he murdered her to protect his secrets.

These astonishing developments dramatically altered Roy’s understanding of the past. Viewers who tuned in promptly shared their reactions online, questioning whether Cassian’s past relationship with Sandy meant he could be Bruno’s biological father. Social media users expressed their shock and theories, with one suggesting Cassian’s involvement in Sandy’s death and questioning Bruno’s paternity. Another viewer highlighted Sandy’s secretiveness and capacity for deception, casting doubt on Bruno’s parentage, while another even speculated if Bruno was Grace’s son at all.

Looking Ahead to the Season Finale

With only one episode remaining in season five, anticipation is high for the Grace season finale. Fortunately for fans, season six has already been confirmed.

Grace will return next Sunday, April 27th, at 8 pm on ITV.
