Top Motoring Expert Recommends Used Hatchbacks Under £6,000

A prominent automotive figure has recently shared his recommendations on YouTube for three pre-owned hatchback models that combine stylish aesthetics with dependable engines, all available for under £6,000. In his popular YouTube channel, the Scottish Car Clan, Grant regularly publishes videos offering advice on the most worthwhile secondhand vehicles to purchase, while also highlighting models with known issues to avoid.

Renault Clio: Fuel-Efficient and Economical

In a recent online video, Grant evaluated several cars within a £6,000 budget, specifically endorsing the Renault Clio 1.5 diesel for its exceptional fuel efficiency. He commented, “We’ve got a very nice Renault Clio here for consideration. While the bumper might be slightly misaligned, and there’s some wheel kerb damage potentially due to inadequate preparation, there are undoubtedly better-presented examples available. However, these are generally sound compact cars. The 1.5 diesel engine, although susceptible to typical modern diesel issues like DPF blockage, doesn’t suffer from fundamental reliability concerns. They are also incredibly economical. During a period when I used one as a courtesy car, I consistently achieved 65 to 70mpg effortlessly.”

The fourth-generation Renault Clio, produced between 2012 and 2020, was notably larger than previous iterations while retaining the fashionable appeal associated with the French supermini.

Although various engines were available, Grant singled out the 1.5 dCi diesel engine, noting its average fuel consumption exceeding 55mpg and the potential to achieve over 70mpg with careful motorway driving.

While older models may not meet low-emission zone standards, drivers can acquire a fourth-generation Renault Clio 1.5 dCi starting from approximately £3,000, making it a budget-friendly and reliable used hatchback choice.

Mazda 2: Opt for Petrol for Optimal Reliability

Later in the video segment, Grant also suggested the third-generation Mazda 2 as a worthy option for used car buyers, advising viewers to prioritise petrol engine versions to prevent potential problems.

He elaborated, “Next, we have a Mazda 2, specifically the 1.5 Skyactiv variant. Let’s examine this closely as it could represent an excellent purchase. The crucial aspect here is that it’s the 1.5 petrol model from 2015. Mazda also produced a less desirable 1.5 diesel from 2015 to 2018, but this petrol engine is quite satisfactory.”

“This appears to be a common trend with Mazda. Their diesel engines can be problematic, while their petrol counterparts are generally excellent. Although potentially a little underpowered, this model is free from any major, obvious defects.” The Mazda 2 1.5 Skyactiv offers a dependable and efficient petrol option in the used hatchback market.

Toyota Yaris: A Pinnacle of Reliability, Check for Rust

Finally, the automotive authority identified the Toyota Yaris as one of the most dependable used vehicles available, cautioning prospective buyers to inspect the bodywork for any indications of rust.

He further stated, “Behold, the epitome of reliability: the Toyota Yaris. Let’s inspect this compact car. Ah, as I suspected – it’s already sold, unsurprisingly. These are fantastic little cars, renowned for their exceptional reliability.”

“They are largely trouble-free mechanically, but the primary concern is rust. Similar to the Honda Jazz, their mechanical components are robust, but rust inspection is vital. Review the MOT history for any mentions of rust or corrosion. This preparation will inform your inspection, highlighting where to focus your attention when viewing the car.” The Toyota Yaris remains a top choice for buyers seeking a reliable and economical used hatchback, provided rust is carefully assessed.
