Effigy Resembling Donald Trump Torched in Spanish Easter Celebration

A figure bearing a striking resemblance to Donald Trump was shot and set ablaze during Easter Sunday festivities in a town in southern Spain. The effigy was paraded through the streets of Coripe, near Seville, before being suspended from a tree, targeted with gunfire, and ultimately ignited as part of a local tradition.

Centuries-Old Tradition Targets “Judas” Figures

For centuries, the town of Coripe has upheld a tradition of displaying and destroying an effigy representing a notorious character, a symbolic “Judas,” each Easter Sunday. This figure embodies actions deemed reprehensible by the community.

Trump Effigy Crafted by Local Mothers

This year, the effigy chosen to represent this “Judas” was modeled after the former US President, Donald Trump. Mothers of students attending the Iripo Primary School in Coripe were responsible for creating the figure.

Depiction and Public Display

Video footage captured the Trump effigy, attired in a dark navy suit, a red tie, and featuring his characteristic blonde hairstyle. It was led through the town under mock armed guard before being hanged from a tree. Subsequently, it was shot at repeatedly with rifles at close range in front of gathered onlookers.

“Quema de Judas” Declared Tourist Interest

This contentious custom, known as the Quema de Judas, has been officially recognized as an Andalusian Festival of National Tourist Interest. It remains a significant event in Coripe, integrated with a procession of the Resurrected Christ and ceremonial gun salutes.

Satirical Punishment of Despicable Acts

According to the Tourism Seville website, this tradition serves as a “satirical punishment of humankind’s most despicable acts.” The ritual is intended to symbolically burn away “corruption and murder, among others, at the bonfire of justice.”

Procession and Symbolic Burning

The website further details the event: “The Judas is brought to the square accompanied by the traditional ‘cabezudos’ and gunmen. Once the effigy is hanging from a fig tree next to the church, the town’s gunmen shoot the image with blank ammunition until it is completely burnt.”

Similar Effigy Burnings Elsewhere

Similar traditions involving the burning of effigies as a form of protest exist in other regions of Spain and throughout Latin America. This year, effigies of Donald Trump were also reportedly burned in Alfaro, Spain, and in areas of Mexico, sometimes alongside effigies of Vladimir Putin and Benjamin Netanyahu.
