Oscar-Winning Collaboration
The couple collaborated professionally on “The Silent Child,” a moving short film centered on a young deaf girl and her social worker. This project achieved widespread acclaim and was honored with the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film at the 2018 Oscars ceremony. Shenton not only wrote and starred in the film, but Overton also served as director.
Advocacy for the Deaf Community
During their emotional acceptance speech at the Oscars, Shenton, whose father experienced hearing loss due to cancer treatment, explained the film’s significance: “Our film depicts a deaf child entering a silent world. This is not an exaggeration or sensationalism for cinematic purposes; it is a reality. Millions of children globally live in silence and encounter communication barriers and obstacles to education.”
She further emphasized: “Deafness is an invisible disability, it is not life-threatening and unnoticeable to the eye. Therefore, I want to express my immense gratitude to the Academy for enabling us to bring this to the attention of a mainstream audience.”
Ambassador for Deaf Children
Following her father’s passing, Shenton learned British Sign Language. In 2011, she was appointed as an ambassador for the National Deaf Children’s Society, furthering her commitment to raising awareness for the deaf community.
