Sussexes’ Popularity Plummets in UK, Survey Indicates

Public sentiment toward Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in the United Kingdom remains notably unfavorable, as evidenced by a recent YouGov survey assessing the popularity of prominent figures. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are ranked considerably low among celebrities in the UK, according to the poll, which evaluated both contemporary and historical personalities.

Survey Highlights Unfavorable Ranking

The YouGov survey, which analyzed public perception of 2,600 individuals, revealed that Prince Harry, age 40, occupies the 1,336th position, sharing this rank with approximately 60 other well-known personalities and securing a 30 percent popularity rating.

His popularity varies across age demographics: 19 percent among GenX, 43 percent with millennials, and 17 percent among baby boomers.

Meghan Markle’s Popularity Even Lower

Meghan Markle, aged 43, fares even lower in the rankings, positioned at 2,034th place with a mere 17 percent popularity. She shares this spot with figures like Bill Cosby and Yoko Ono. Her favorability across generations includes 24 percent with GenX, 18 percent with millennials, and a low 4 percent with boomers.

Comparison to Senior Royals

In contrast, senior members of the royal family enjoy significantly higher approval ratings. Prince William is ranked 43rd with a 71 percent popularity, while Kate Middleton secures the 104th spot with 64 percent. King Charles III is positioned at 223rd with a 57 percent popularity.

Top Tier Celebrities in the UK

Leading the YouGov poll is Sir David Attenborough, acclaimed for his nature documentaries, with an impressive 84 percent popularity. The top five is rounded out by esteemed figures including Steven Spielberg, Rowan Atkinson, Judi Dench, and the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Bottom of the Rankings

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the least popular figures in the survey, each with a 3 percent popularity rating, are British politician Stephen Crabb, American author Lincoln Child, and Welsh politician Andrew R. Davies.

Expert Analysis on Popularity Trends

Milan Dinic, Director of Content Strategy and Innovation at YouGov, commented on the findings, stating, “YouGov Ratings assesses popularity based on extensive feedback from the British public. The top echelon is largely composed of individuals from the entertainment sector who have cultivated enduring careers.”

Dinic further explained, “Those who rank highest have resonated with a broad audience across different generations. They have generally avoided polarizing public opinion and successfully maintained social and cultural relevance.”

Factors Contributing to Sussexes’ Unpopularity

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have faced considerable disapproval in the UK since stepping back from their royal roles in 2020 and relocating to the United States.

Their standing further declined following critical remarks about the royal family in a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, their Netflix docuseries “Harry & Meghan,” and Prince Harry’s autobiography, “Spare.”

Current Status and US Favourability

Prince Harry has since formally declared the United States as his primary residence, further distancing himself from his British ties and remaining estranged from family members.

The couple resides in a lavish Montecito, California estate with their children, Archie and Lilibet.

Notably, their favorability has also decreased in the United States. Royal expert Ingrid Seward suggested last year that Americans’ declining opinion of the couple stems from their perceived treatment of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
