Southampton Secures Late Draw Against West Ham, Equalling Derby’s Premier League Low
Lesley Ugochukwu’s dramatic late goal salvaged a draw for Southampton against West Ham, ensuring the Saints matched Derby County‘s infamous record for the lowest Premier League points total in a season. Despite being already relegated, Southampton initially appeared destined to cement their place as the Premier League‘s poorest-performing team ever after Jarrod Bowen gave West Ham the lead. However, in a largely uneventful match at the London Stadium, the Saints rallied to claim a point in added time, with Chelsea loanee Ugochukwu firing home through a congested penalty area.
Southampton’s travelling supporters celebrated their equaliser enthusiastically, seemingly drowning out any potential reaction from Derby County fans as their unwanted record of 11 points from the 2007-08 season was equalled.
West Ham’s Struggles Continue Under Graham Potter
The point does little to alleviate concerns surrounding West Ham‘s form under new manager, Graham Potter. The Hammers have averaged just one point per game since Potter‘s appointment, a less impressive return than that of his predecessor, Julen Lopetegui.
Potter’s Post-Match Analysis
Following the game, Potter expressed his disappointment, criticising his team’s inability to maintain control during matches. He acknowledged the need for significant changes in the summer. “I don’t think we warranted much more, which indicates our level of disappointment,” Potter stated. “Credit to Southampton, but we failed to do enough to secure a win, and we need to examine the reasons for this.”
“As the home side against Southampton, it’s expected that West Ham takes the initiative. We must be capable of dictating the play, attacking effectively, and managing the game,” he added.

“We were unable to achieve that control, and ultimately, that empowers any opponent, irrespective of their league position or points tally.”
“We must assess the entire season, take a broader perspective, and consider the necessary decisions moving forward because our current position and performance levels require substantial improvement.”
Match Highlights: Early Chances and First-Half Frustration
West Ham nearly took an early advantage within the first three minutes when Niclas Füllkrug, making his first start since January, connected with Lucas Paquetá’s delivery into the box. However, Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale reacted sharply to deny the German striker.
Despite West Ham’s precarious position above the relegation zone – although statistically unlikely to be demoted – their first-half performance lacked urgency. Southampton, despite their season-long struggles, appeared the more threatening side. Kamaldeen Sulemana created an opportunity for Kyle Walker-Peters, whose shot across goal narrowly missed the target.
The Saints, the league’s lowest scorers, came even closer after half an hour. Jack Stephens’s effort was blocked by Paquetá, and Sulemana’s powerful rebound struck the crossbar.
The halftime whistle was met with boos from the home crowd, a reflection of the underwhelming first-half display.
Second Half Action: Bowen Breaks the Deadlock, Ugochukwu Rescues a Point
Shortly after the restart, Jarrod Bowen broke the deadlock. The goal originated from a Southampton corner, with Emerson Palmieri and Mohammed Kudus advancing the ball to Füllkrug, who provided a precise pass for Bowen to score his tenth goal of the season.
This goal marked Southampton‘s 78th conceded goal of the campaign. Moments later, Füllkrug headed in a James Ward-Prowse corner, but the goal was disallowed as the striker used his forearm against Ramsdale.
Late in the game, Southampton‘s hopes of securing a point seemed to fade when substitute Tyler Dibling missed a clear opportunity. However, in the fourth minute of added time, Dibling found Walker-Peters, whose cross deflected off Max Kilman into the path of Ugochukwu, who finished decisively.
Southampton Manager’s Reaction
Interim Southampton manager, Simon Rusk, expressed his satisfaction with the draw. “I believe we can be genuinely pleased. I felt it was the minimum we deserved,” he commented.
“I thought the players displayed mental resilience in the second half and didn’t succumb to negativity. We thoroughly earned our late equaliser.”
“It was really pleasing to witness the connection between the players and the fans at the end. After such a challenging season, a late goal like that provides a wonderful moment.”
