Subaru Debuts New Electric SUV Lineup at New York Auto Show

Subaru, the automaker recognized for its outdoor-focused vehicles, unveiled its latest offerings at the 2025 New York Auto Show this week, presenting two new electric SUVs. Headlining the event was the refreshed Solterra EV, featuring enhanced performance and extended range, making it a more compelling choice in the EV market, albeit with a revised aesthetic. Joining the Solterra is the all-new Trailseeker, a larger electric SUV designed with increased interior space for both everyday errands and adventurous excursions.

Enhanced 2026 Subaru Solterra EV: Range and Performance Upgrades

The updated Solterra EV reportedly offers over 25% greater range compared to the previous model year, achieved through a modest increase in battery capacity to 74.7 kilowatt-hours (up 1.9 kWh) and advancements in energy management systems. Subaru estimates the electric crossover now achieves approximately 285 miles per charge. While this improvement may not position it as a range leader, any extension in driving distance is a valuable enhancement.

Refined battery preconditioning technology has enabled Subaru to elevate the EV’s DC fast charging rate to 150 kW, thereby reducing charging durations. The Solterra is now capable of charging from 10% to 80% charge level in under 35 minutes. The 2026 model will also include a standard North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, providing seamless access to the extensive Tesla Supercharger network.

Improvements to the EV’s standard dual-motor powertrain have also resulted in performance gains, with the standard configuration now producing 233 horsepower combined. The top-tier Solterra XT variant delivers 338 horsepower, enabling acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds. Modifications to the power and traction control systems further optimize performance, while revisions to the suspension and power steering are intended to enhance handling and driver control.

Externally, the EV incorporates numerous design modifications, including a newly illuminated Subaru emblem and redesigned headlights. Depending on the selected exterior color, body-colored fenders will also be available for the Solterra. This styling choice aims to provide the EV with a more urban aesthetic, contrasting with the previous rugged, matte fender appearance, though opinions on its visual appeal may vary.

The interior of the SUV is upgraded with a larger 14-inch touchscreen infotainment display featuring standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. New dual 15-watt wireless phone chargers for front occupants and high-power USB-C charging ports for rear passengers are also included.

Introducing the 2026 Subaru Trailseeker EV: A Larger Electric SUV Option

Alongside the refreshed Solterra, Subaru also presented the new 2026 Subaru Trailseeker. The Trailseeker essentially expands upon the Solterra EV, utilizing the same standard dual-motor all-wheel drive system and maintaining a class-leading 8.3 inches of ground clearance, while also benefiting from the same enhancements to the powertrain and battery technology.

This includes the shared 74.7-kWh battery pack and the improved 150-kW charging capability via its NACS port. However, the Trailseeker’s estimated range is slightly reduced to 260 miles per charge, likely attributable to the increased weight of the larger vehicle and a higher output of 375 combined horsepower from its dual-motor setup. This increased power allows the Trailseeker to achieve a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 4.4 seconds and provides a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds.

The Trailseeker’s expanded dimensions and taller roofline translate to increased passenger and cargo volume, although specific interior measurements have not yet been released by Subaru. To support outdoor equipment and electronics, the EV also features a 120-volt power outlet in the cargo area, enabling vehicle-to-load functionality for powering devices on the go.

Availability

The 2026 Subaru Solterra is anticipated to reach dealerships in the United States in late 2025. The 2026 Trailseeker is expected to follow shortly, arriving at dealerships in early 2026. Pricing details and further specifications are expected to be released in the coming months.
