Prince William and Princess Kate Opt for Private Easter Away From Royal Gathering

Prince William and Princess Kate, the Prince and Princess of Wales, chose not to attend the Royal Family’s Easter Sunday festivities for the second consecutive year. Instead of joining King Charles and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle, the couple opted for a private celebration.

The Prince and Princess of Wales, along with their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, spent Easter in Norfolk. This marked their absence from the Easter Matins Service at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, where King Charles, Queen Camilla, and other members of the Royal Family were present.

Their Easter holiday was spent privately at Anmer Hall, their country residence in Sandringham. This afforded them a relaxed and intimate setting for the occasion.

Family Time Prioritized

According to a source familiar with the Royal Family, William and Kate’s decision was motivated by a desire to “spend time together as a family before the children return to school.” This underscores their commitment to family life amidst royal duties.

Past Easter Absence

Notably, the Prince and Princess of Wales also did not attend the Easter service the previous year. This absence followed Princess Kate’s public announcement of her cancer diagnosis. Recent reports, however, have indicated that the Princess is now in remission after undergoing treatment.

Royal Children and Easter Treats

Prince William previously shared a glimpse into their family’s Easter traditions. Back in 2020, he revealed that Easter for their children typically involves “a lot of chocolate being eaten.”

During a virtual royal engagement video call in 2020, Prince William humorously remarked, “There will be a lot of chocolate being eaten here, don’t worry!” Princess Kate playfully responded to her husband’s comment with, “You keep eating it!”

Royal Attendance at Windsor

The Easter Sunday service at St. George’s Chapel was led by King Charles and Queen Camilla. Their presence highlighted the traditional royal observance of Easter.

Other Royal Family members in attendance included:

  • Princess Anne and Sir Timothy Laurence
  • Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson
  • Prince Edward and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh
  • Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi with his son James, Earl of Wessex
  • Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank

King Charles’ attendance at this year’s Easter service follows his participation in the previous year’s service, even shortly after his own cancer diagnosis. Last year, the King maintained a safe distance from the public during the service and did not host the customary Easter lunch at Windsor.

Traditional Royal Easter Menu

Historically, the Royal Family has gathered for a grand Easter roast supper at Windsor. Royal chef Darren McGrady previously shared details of the traditional menu, revealing, “We’d go straight into the main course — a traditional roast lamb with seasonal vegetables.”

Elaborating on the Easter feast, McGrady mentioned that Easter eggs from chocolatier Charbonnel et Walker are a customary element. He also described a “compound salad served in a kidney dish,” consisting of “lettuce and cucumber with a little mint or some grated carrot and coriander.”

The last full Royal Family Easter gathering, prior to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepping back from royal duties, was in 2023. That year notably marked Prince Louis’ first appearance at the annual Easter church service.
