Subway Shooting at Harvard Prompts Shelter-in-Place Order

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – An investigation is underway by transit police in Boston following a shooting incident on a subway platform at Harvard University on Sunday. The incident led the university to issue a shelter-in-place directive for students and staff.

Transit System Disrupted During Police Search

Transportation authorities temporarily redirected subway riders on a segment of the city’s transit network to shuttle buses. This rerouting facilitated a police search for a suspect involving officers from multiple departments.

Details of the Harvard Square Station Incident

According to a preliminary report from Richard Sullivan, superintendent of the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority Transit Police, a man brandishing a firearm discharged four to five shots at a “targeted individual.” This occurred on the southbound platform of the Harvard Square station. The suspect subsequently fled the premises.

No Injuries Reported in Subway Shooting

Sullivan stated that current evidence suggests neither the intended target nor any other individuals sustained injuries during the event.

University Issues and Lifts Shelter-in-Place

Law enforcement was alerted to reports of gunfire at approximately 2:15 p.m. Subsequently, Harvard University disseminated an alert to its community, urging individuals to seek shelter in the nearest building and remain there until further notice. The alert indicated that police were actively searching the vicinity of the busy Harvard Square station, located near the university’s primary campus in Cambridge.
