Padres’ Luis Arraez Hospitalized After First Inning Collision
San Diego Padres infielder Luis Arraez was transported to a hospital following a collision at first base with Houston Astros’ Mauricio Dubón during Sunday night’s baseball game. The incident occurred in the first inning, leading to immediate concern for the Padres’ player.
Arraez Stable After First Base Incident
Following the on-field incident, the San Diego Padres released a statement on social media platform X, confirming that “Luis Arraez has been transported to Houston Methodist Hospital for further evaluation.” The team added reassuringly, “He is currently stable, conscious, responsive, and able to move his extremities,” indicating positive initial signs despite the concerning nature of the collision.
Details of the First Inning Play
The play unfolded as Arraez executed a drag bunt on the initial pitch of his at-bat. The ball rolled down the first base line towards Christian Walker, who then flipped it to second baseman Mauricio Dubón, who was moving to cover first base. As Dubón reached the base, he and the Padres designated hitter Arraez collided. It appeared Arraez’s face made contact with Dubón’s arm or elbow during the play.
Immediate On-Field Response
Both players fell to the ground as a result of the impact. Arraez, however, appeared to absorb the brunt of the collision, remaining motionless in foul territory near first base. Trainers and coaching staff from both the Padres and Astros promptly rushed to his aid. Dubón and Walker, along with Padres teammates Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado, watched as medical personnel attended to Arraez.
Arraez Carted Off Field, Game Resumes
After being attended to on the field, Luis Arraez was carefully placed onto a backboard and subsequently carted off the field. In a moment of interaction as he was being moved, Arraez reportedly put his arm around San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt. Following a delay of approximately 10 minutes due to the injury and on-field response, play was resumed.
