Keith Richards Reveals Reggae Track as Ultimate Favorite

Rolling Stones legend Keith Richards, renowned for his deep-seated passion for rock and roll and classic blues, has surprised fans by naming a reggae song as his all-time preferred track. In a revealing interview, the iconic guitarist disclosed that Gregory Isaacs’ “Extra Classic” holds a special place in his musical heart. This revelation contrasts with his well-known appreciation for rock and blues pioneers.

Rock Icon’s Desert Island Choice

During a past appearance on the program Desert Island Discs, Richards had previously listed Chuck Berry’s “Wee Wee Hours” and Hank Williams’ “You Win Again” among his most cherished songs. However, when BBC Radio host Kirsty Young posed a challenging question, his ultimate musical preference was brought to light.

Young asked: “If you were compelled to save only one record from being lost to the sea, which single disc would you choose?”

Richards responded with playful reluctance: “Oh you’re killing me, Kirsty, really, that’s unfair.”

Gregory Isaacs’ “Extra Classic” Claims Top Spot

Despite his initial hesitation, when pressed further, Richards declared: “Okay, because I’m on an island and I want to maintain the relaxed atmosphere, Gregory Isaacs, Extra Classic.”

Jamaican Influence and Song’s Significance

Earlier in the broadcast, the celebrated musician elaborated on his connection to the 1977 reggae masterpiece. He explained: “Gregory Isaacs, for many years I resided in Jamaica, and I have always considered Gregory to be among the finest songwriters to emerge from that island, as well as a truly sweet vocalist.”

Richards further drew parallels between the Jamaican music scene of the 1970s and the burgeoning music scene in England during the early 1960s, stating: “There was a feeling in the 70s in Jamaica that reminded me of the early 60s in England, that something significant was unfolding. ‘Extra Classic’ is also the song associated with meeting my partner, so I felt compelled to choose it.”
