British Couple Among Victims in Naples Cable Car Tragedy

A UK couple is confirmed among the fatalities of a cable car crash that occurred in Naples, Italy. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office stated they are providing assistance to the bereaved family following the incident.

Fatal Incident at Monte Faito

Graeme Winn, 65, and Elaine Winn, 58, were tragically killed on Thursday at Monte Faito, located in Castellammare di Stabia, a town close to Naples in southern Italy. The cable car they were riding in, ascending the mountain, suffered a catastrophic failure when a traction cable severed.

Details of the Cable Car Accident

The snapping of the cable brought the entire cable car system to an abrupt halt. Another cable car, situated near the base of the mountain with 16 individuals aboard, was also affected. Passengers in the second car were subsequently evacuated.

Victims Identified

In addition to the British couple, other victims of the fatal Naples cable car crash include Janan Suliman, a 25-year-old Arab woman holding Israeli citizenship. Her brother, Thaeb Suliman, aged 23, sustained severe injuries and was hospitalized in Ponticelli. Carmine Parlato, identified by local sources as the cable car operator, also perished in the Italy cable car accident.

Investigation Underway

Prosecutors in the Torre Annunziata region have initiated a formal investigation into the Monte Faito cable car tragedy. The probe will examine potential manslaughter charges in connection with the crash, which took place approximately 45km south-east of Naples.

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office commented, “We are offering support to the families of a British couple who tragically died in Italy and are liaising with the relevant local authorities.”

Maintenance History and Eyewitness Account

Italian news outlets have reported that one of the primary cables supporting the cable car cabin fractured. The cable car service, which had recently reopened for the spring and summer season just ten days prior, reportedly underwent a routine maintenance inspection the week before the devastating incident.

Umberto De Gregorio, chairman of EAV, the public transport entity responsible for operating the cable car service, described the event as “a tragedy” in a social media post.

Megan Pacey, a British tourist from London, along with her husband James Ross and their children, witnessed the evacuation efforts of passengers stranded in the suspended cable car.

Ms. Pacey recounted, “We were moments away from the incident occurring. They commenced winching individuals down from the stranded cable car. We observed the initial individuals being lowered in harnesses, and as we departed, there was a palpable sense of urgency that had taken hold.”

She further noted observing flowers and candles placed on the steps outside the railway station on Friday, with emergency services still present at the scene.
