Hearts Manager Critchley Condemns Referee’s Conduct After Scottish Cup Semi-Final Defeat

Under pressure Hearts manager Neil Critchley voiced strong criticism of referee John Beaton, citing a perceived lack of respect following the dismissal of two of his players in their extra-time Scottish Cup semi-final loss to Aberdeen. The Tynecastle side succumbed to a late goal after a controversial match at Hampden Park.

Red Cards and Touchline Dismissal Fuel Frustration

Referee Beaton issued red cards to Michael Steinwender late in the first half and Cammy Devlin in the dying moments of extra time. Adding to the drama, Critchley’s assistant manager, Mike Garrity, was also sent off after the final whistle. These dismissals occurred before Aberdeen substitute Oday Dabbagh scored a decisive 118th-minute goal, securing victory for the Dons and eliminating Hearts from the competition.

Critchley, visibly frustrated and facing increasing pressure regarding his future after Hearts failed to secure a top-six finish in the Scottish Premiership, expressed disbelief at both red card decisions. He stated Beaton appeared overly hasty in sending off Steinwender and questioned Devlin’s dismissal, which occurred shortly before Aberdeen’s winning goal.

Critchley Alleges Lack of Respect from Match Official

However, Critchley’s primary grievance was with what he described as the referee’s disrespectful demeanor when he attempted to discuss the pivotal decisions that significantly altered the course of the semi-final clash.

‘I attempted to engage in conversation,’ Critchley explained. ‘While there was a response, when you approach someone respectfully, you anticipate reciprocal respect.’

‘I believe I treat everyone with respect in my conduct, and I expect the same in return. However, in this instance, it felt absent. I was near my assistant when he was dismissed at the end. There was no swearing, merely a request to speak with him. His reaction, in my view, was far from satisfactory.’

Critchley expressed anger at referee Beaton’s attitude following the red card incidents.

Steinwender’s challenge on Topi Keskinen was a key moment in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

Steinwender reacts with disbelief as referee Beaton brandishes the red card just before half-time.

‘Then, when I inquired about the grounds for Steinwender’s dismissal, the referee threatened to send me off as well. I questioned his reasoning, emphasizing that no offensive language was used, and that such behavior is not in my nature. While I acknowledge displaying passion on the sidelines and occasionally needing to be calmed down by the fourth official, I strive for mutual respect.’

‘Regrettably, on this occasion, that level of respect was not forthcoming.’

Questionable Red Card Decisions

Steinwender’s red card, issued in the 44th minute for a challenge on Topi Keskinen, forced Critchley to drastically revise his game plan at halftime, switching to a three-man defense. He remained critical of Beaton’s judgment in this crucial decision.

‘I have never witnessed a referee produce a red card with such speed in my entire career,’ Critchley remarked. ‘The incident occurred far from our goal, and we had defenders in position to recover. It appeared he was eager to dismiss him.’

‘I felt there were several questionable calls throughout the match. Cammy’s first yellow card, and subsequently the second. In the second incident, he was in motion, attempting to clear the ball when the Aberdeen player (Dante Polvara) intervened.’

Critchley consoles Cammy Devlin following the midfielder’s second yellow card in extra time.

‘Yes, it’s a foul, but a booking? It seemed excessive. It was truly astonishing.’

Manager Dismisses Job Security Concerns

Despite the Scottish Cup exit and Premiership disappointments, Critchley refuted any suggestion that his job security was precarious, following a season that has now concluded without silverware or top league placement.

‘No, those concerns are not something I am focused on,’ he stated. ‘Considering the position when I took charge – two points after 11 games – our points-per-game ratio during my tenure would comfortably place us in the top six. Furthermore, we progressed to a semi-final, pushing today’s match to the limit despite playing with ten men for a significant portion of the game.’

‘There are substantial positive indicators, and we possess a clear plan and strategy for future progress.’
