Sky Sports F1 Commentary Team in Saudi Arabia FP2 Spat Amidst Tsunoda Crash
During the Free Practice 2 (FP2) broadcast at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft was compelled to reprimand his co-commentator Karun Chandhok. The former Formula 1 driver used unsuitable language while discussing a Williams fan at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit. Television cameras had focused on a supporter displaying a handmade sign that read: “I flew 10,000km to see Carbono,” a fan-created moniker for drivers Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon.
Commentary Booth Exchange
Lead commentator Croft utilized the sign to transition into a discussion about the Williams drivers. He highlighted the fact that both had undergone appendectomies after entering F1, and pointed out that their respective stand-in drivers, Oliver Bearman and Nyck de Vries, both secured points upon their debuts.
“I need to consult Anthony Davidson to ascertain if he had a more tenuous connection, because I cannot recall it,” Chandhok retorted, seemingly unimpressed with Croft’s statistical observation. Croft then responded, “I am simply supporting their efforts. I commend that fan.”
Chandhok’s On-Air Remark
Chandhok remained unconvinced and continued, “Why not simply state that? ‘I commend that fan,’ rather than the world’s most tenuous link. Jesus Christ! Amazing. Crofty has officially lost his mind. [He] needs to retire to bed.”
Croft Intervenes Over Language
Croft then intervened, requesting an apology from his commentary partner. “And I am aware it is Easter, but please mind your language,” Croft stated firmly. Chandhok questioned, “What do you mean?” Croft clarified, “Your exclamation regarding my tenuous link. Apologies, everyone, if anyone was offended by that remark.”

Yuki Tsunoda Crashes Out in FP2
The FP2 session was not without incident on the track either. As the session clock approached single digits, Yuki Tsunoda made an error at the final corner, grazing the inside barrier. The resulting damage fractured his steering assembly, sending his car directly into the outside barriers.
Red Flag Triggered by On-Track Debris
Due to debris and fragments of carbon fibre scattered across the track surface, marshals were required to deploy the red flag. “I simply turned in too aggressively and clipped the inside wall, causing damage,” Tsunoda explained to media personnel. “Following that, [I had] absolutely no control, so yes, apologies to the team. The pace appeared promising, so [it is a] disappointment.”
He further added, “I mean, my confidence level is quite good. The last soft tyre run was slightly compromised due to warm-up and other factors, but overall, reasonably good. I had limited time with the long run, which I caused myself, so I cannot truly complain. I certainly desired to conclude the session in a more positive manner, for sure.”
