PROMONTORY, Utah – An explosion occurred at a Northrop Grumman manufacturing and testing facility in Promontory, Utah, on Wednesday, April 16, prompting a response from emergency personnel. The incident took place at the aerospace and defense company’s site, which is crucial for the development and testing of solid rocket engines.

The blast at the Promontory site, owned by the aerospace and defense technology firm Northrop Grumman, was reported at 9:38 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (1338 GMT, 7:38 a.m. local time in Promontory). Upon arrival, emergency teams found one structure completely destroyed by the detonation.

No Injuries Reported in Facility Incident

“Initial reports indicate that there are no injuries or fatalities at this time,” the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office communicated in a social media post on Facebook. Authorities affirmed that the incident resulted in no casualties or injuries.

Facility’s Role in Space Program Components

Northrop Grumman’s Utah facility is responsible for the production and assessment of solid rocket motors, notably those utilized in NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket for the Artemis Program. The expansive campus encompasses over 10 miles (16 kilometers) of Utah’s desert terrain, situated northwest of Promontory, and comprises two main centers of operations.
