A sharp dive, a glove attempt, but Hurst is dropped by Cox off Scriven’s bowling. Moments later, another simpler chance goes begging as Rehan Ahmed at third slip fails to hold onto a catch off Mike. Hurst survives two drops in his initial nine deliveries – a century seems inevitable.
And the count is now three wickets down for Lancashire. Leicestershire appear confident, their players displaying buoyant spirits. Bohannon departs for nine runs, following his substantial score last week. Mike strikes in his first over, securing a wicket.
In Division Two encounters, Harris and Bohannon are building a solid partnership: accumulating six hard-fought runs in seven cautious overs before a couple of boundaries break the deadlock. Lancashire stand at 40-2.
Derbyshire faced early setbacks losing three quick wickets to Northamptonshire, but Madsen and Guthrie are currently working to recover the innings. Derbyshire are now 72-3.
A resurgent Kent team is making quick work of Gloucestershire‘s top order, with Bancroft falling lbw to Gilchrist for 2. At Lord’s, ul Hassan and Northeast are currently holding firm against Middlesex‘s attack, Glamorgan at 51-1.
Rain Halts Play at Edgbaston
As rain interrupts proceedings in Birmingham, let’s take a look at how play is unfolding across other grounds.
Division One Match Overview
Lyth and Bean are steadily accumulating runs against Durham (Yorkshire 31-0). Worcestershire have made breakthroughs this morning at Chelmsford, with young Jacob Duffy, in only his second red-ball match, taking two wickets (Essex 54-2).
In Southampton, Somerset have lost Sean Dickson early on, dismissed by Wheal (Somerset 44-1). Meanwhile, Brett Hutton claimed both Warwickshire‘s opening batsmen before the rain interruption (Warwickshire 34-1).
Sussex are currently dominating against the 2024 champions, scoring rapidly at 78-0 from 13 overs.

Another wicket at Old Trafford as KJ advances down the pitch, attempts a square drive, but edges Holland (2-11) to first slip who secures the catch.
Jones appears bewildered as his middle stump is dislodged. The ball deftly moves between bat and pad. Lancashire at 18-1. Next in is Josh Bohannon, who, according to Paul Edwards, almost severed his thumb while preparing lettuce this winter.
Sam Cook has been rested by Essex, presumably under guidance from England selectors. The first Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge is just over a month away.

David Lloyd has just entered the press area. He regards Yorkshire‘s James Wharton as county cricket’s premier fielder, drawing comparisons to a young Clive Lloyd. Any other contenders for this accolade?
Play is underway at Old Trafford. Ken Grime’s weather forecast suggests conditions should remain favorable until tea. Leicestershire opted to bowl after winning the toss. The last Leicestershire victory at this venue was in 2005, when Ken assisted Mal Loye to the crease following a back spasm. Loye was transported on a porter’s trolley, strapped to a crash mat through the pavilion. Despite scoring three not out and reacting audibly with every hit, his frustration at Jimmy’s dismissal, with victory within reach, spurred him to walk back unaided.
Notably, the pitch appears to be offering lively conditions this morning.
Country Diary Reflection
A truly charming observation, resonating with authenticity.

Match Day Preamble
Greetings! The cricket season’s third round commences this Good Friday, presenting an unexpected league table configuration. Warwickshire, Sussex, and Nottinghamshire lead Division One, while Leicestershire, Kent, and Derbyshire top Division Two.
Manchester is overcast yet rain-free, populated by magpies but still awaiting the arrival of swallows. I am heading to Old Trafford for the Lancashire versus league-leading Leicestershire match. In Division Two, a confident Kent prepares to face Gloucestershire, Derbyshire welcomes Northamptonshire, and Glamorgan and Middlesex compete to avoid the early-season wooden spoon.
In Division One, Yorkshire, buoyed by Monday’s win, travels to Durham; Worcestershire are at Chelmsford; a struggling Somerset seeks a turnaround at Southampton; and the Midlands powerhouses clash at Edgbaston. Reigning champions Surrey, also seeking their first win, visit Hove.
Play is scheduled to begin at 11 am. Please enjoy a hot-cross bun and join us for the updates.
