Tesla Spring Update Enhances Electric Vehicles with Adaptive High Beams and Trip Planning
Despite a potential dip in sales, Tesla is proactively enhancing its electric vehicles (EVs) with the rollout of its spring software update. This latest iteration introduces several valuable functionalities, including adaptive high beam headlights for compatible models and significantly improved trip planning capabilities for Tesla owners.
Adaptive High Beams Now Available
The recent update activates adaptive high beams for select Tesla vehicles. This advanced feature intelligently manages high beam usage, preventing glare for oncoming drivers and cyclists. Utilizing the beamforming technology within the matrix headlights, hardware installed since 2022, this functionality mirrors a feature previously launched in Europe. The updated Model Y will also come equipped with these smart headlights.
Technology Legalization and Adoption
While European automakers like Audi have utilized adaptive headlights for approximately a decade, the technology only gained legal clearance in the United States in 2022. Although some US manufacturers, such as Ford with its F-150 Lightning, possess the necessary hardware, full activation of adaptive light features is not yet universally implemented.
Enhanced Trip Planning with Alternative Routes
The spring software release also brings “Alternative Trip Plans,” a highly practical function providing Tesla drivers with options for EV navigation. Users can now select routes prioritizing speed, minimal charging stops, or points of interest such as highly-rated restaurants, stores, and restrooms. This expands upon Tesla’s already robust navigation system, which currently surpasses many competitors, though it still lacks integration of third-party chargers in automatic route calculations. Furthermore, highway avoidance is now a selectable navigation preference.
Dashcam and Sentry Mode Improvements
Tesla’s security features, Sentry Mode and Dashcam, receive enhanced recording capabilities. These systems can now capture footage from the B-pillar side cameras, increasing camera utilization from four to six vehicle cameras. The updated Dashcam viewer on the infotainment display incorporates a grid view, simplifying the review process for recorded clips. It’s important to note that these dashcam enhancements are exclusively available for Tesla models equipped with AMD-powered infotainment systems, excluding vehicles with Intel processors.
