Teenager’s Vaping Habit Leads to Near-Fatal Lung Infection, Prompting Urgent Warning

A 16-year-old girl who narrowly survived a severe lung infection is issuing a strong warning to young people about the perils of vaping. Medical professionals have indicated that her 18-month e-cigarette usage was the primary cause of her life-threatening illness. This case underscores the significant health risks of vaping, especially among teenagers, and serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with vaping and e-cigarette use. The incident highlights the urgent need for increased awareness and caution regarding vaping among youth.

Deadly Infection Linked to E-Cigarette Use

Isabella Troncao, a resident of Las Vegas, contracted a bacterial infection in her throat the previous year. This infection rapidly escalated into Lemierre’s syndrome, a critical condition where bacteria spreads to vital blood vessels. This dangerous illness can quickly affect various parts of the body, notably the jugular veins, which are essential for connecting the head and heart.

Sepsis and Hospitalization

Troncao’s condition deteriorated, leading to sepsis, a life-threatening response to infection. She was described as being ‘hours from death’ and required intensive medical intervention. Her ordeal included a month-long hospitalization during which doctors drained a liter of fluid from her affected lung.

Teenager’s Plea: ‘Nobody Should Vape’

Following her harrowing experience, the young woman is now passionately advising her peers to abstain from vaping. “It’s detrimental to your lungs and is making numerous individuals unwell,” she stated emphatically.

“I genuinely believe it was divine intervention that I was given a second chance at life. It’s astonishing to consider how easily I could have lost my life in such a short period. This experience has definitely made me feel like I’ve been granted a new lease on life.”

Disposable E-cigarette Popularity Trends

This alarming incident occurs as trends in disposable e-cigarette popularity in the UK show signs of changing. Research from University College London (UCL) indicates a significant decrease in disposable vape usage among 16-24 year-olds, dropping from 63 percent to 35 percent in the past year.

However, data suggests that overall vaping rates have remained consistent between January 2024 and January of this year.

Shift Towards Refillable Vapes

Researchers suggest that rather than quitting vaping altogether, young users may be transitioning to refillable and rechargeable vaping devices. This shift could be in anticipation of forthcoming bans on disposable vapes, which are frequently marketed to appeal to younger demographics.

Initiation of Vaping Habit

Isabella began vaping 18 months prior, initially to gain favor with someone she was romantically interested in. She started with legal marijuana vapes before progressing to nicotine-based products.

Within a week of switching to nicotine vapes, she started experiencing adverse health effects.

Rapid Health Decline

“They irritated my throat and I became sick within a week,” she recounted. “It felt like an immense weight was pressing down on my chest. The pain was intense; I desperately needed to breathe deeply but was unable to.”

Her health rapidly worsened. “I became too weak to even get to the bathroom and struggled to stay conscious. My mother and brother had to assist me to the car to get me to the hospital because I was unable to walk on my own.”

Emergency Hospitalization and Septic Shock

The severity of the situation became apparent when hospital doctors expedited her assessment. “They took blood samples, and soon after, they informed my mother that I was in septic shock. The infection had spread throughout my entire body, causing organ shutdown.”

“They informed me that had I arrived at the hospital just a few hours later, I would not have survived. I was undeniably on the brink of death, which is terrifying to contemplate.”

Medical Intervention and Diagnosis

Doctors at St. Rose Dominican Hospital in Nevada, where she received treatment, confirmed that vaping likely contributed to the bacterial accumulation in her system, triggering the sepsis.

To save her, the medical team performed a procedure to drain one liter of fluid from Isabella’s lung, she explained.

Extended Hospital Stay and Recovery

She remained hospitalized for a month for continuous monitoring due to blood clots identified in her throat, lung, and left arm.

Mother’s Ordeal and Warning

Francesca, Isabella’s 44-year-old mother, initially believed her daughter had a minor sore throat and was unaware of her vaping habit.

“I discovered the vape in her pocket, but she was afraid to reveal where she had obtained it,” Francesca stated.

“She was dating someone new and vaping with him. It’s difficult because I also feel responsible in some way.”

“We all make mistakes, but the way these vapes are marketed with appealing fruit flavors and vibrant colors is concerning… they are far more dangerous than traditional cigarettes.”

“The most unbearable feeling was hearing medical professionals say they were unsure if she would survive – that was incredibly distressing.”

Vaping Statistics and Legislative Measures

Recent data indicates that approximately 5.6 million individuals in the UK currently vape, with 2.2 million using both e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes.

The Tobacco and Vapes Bill, currently under parliamentary review, includes provisions that could impose restrictions on vape packaging, marketing, and flavors, reflecting growing concerns about youth vaping and public health.
