Germ Alert: TikTok Video Exposes Bacteria Lurking on Airport Seats

Before boarding calls, airport seating areas are frequently used by passengers seeking respite for tired legs or even a temporary sleeping spot. However, a recent TikTok video revealing the extent of germs present on these seats might make travelers reconsider before settling down. Despite routine cleaning efforts at airports globally, the high volume of passengers utilizing gate seating around the clock suggests a significant potential for germ accumulation. This viral video highlights why airport seat hygiene should be a concern for all travelers.

Viral TikTok Investigation Reveals Airport Seat Germs

TikTok user @howdirtyis conducted an investigation at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, swabbing seats and subsequently testing the samples in a laboratory. The video clip captures the user swiping a swab across the surface of a black and red seat in a gate area within the busy NYC travel hub.

Samples were collected from various parts of the seating, including armrests and seat backs. The footage then transitions to a petri dish where the collected sample is deposited and subsequently placed in refrigeration to incubate and allow results to become visible.

Upon re-opening the refrigerator, distinct streaks of the sample are clearly visible, indicating microbial growth.

‘Mainly Skin Bugs’ Found on Airport Seating

The results presented in the TikTok video are concerning. The petri dish analysis revealed the presence of skin bacteria, presumably left behind by numerous travelers. The video caption clarified, ‘Pretty rough, but looks like mainly skin bugs,’ before concluding with a warning: ‘Just something to bear in mind if you’re taking a quick nap.’

The video has garnered over 56,000 likes, with viewers expressing dismay at the unseen germs potentially residing on airport passenger seats.

One commenter expressed their unease, stating, ‘The airport never fails to make me feel gross.’ Another user highlighted their post-travel routine, adding, ‘This is why I change immediately when I get home.’

Expert Advice on Minimizing Germ Exposure at Airports

Following a recent measles outbreak at several US airports, Dr. Darin Detwiler, a former public health expert for the FDA, shared advice on minimizing germ exposure while traveling through airports. He emphasized that germ exposure begins even before entering the airport terminal.

‘Rideshares, taxis, and airport shuttles can be breeding grounds for illness, often lacking adequate sanitation and ventilation between different passengers,’ Dr. Detwiler told MailOnline.

To enhance safety, Dr. Detwiler recommends proactively disinfecting frequently touched surfaces in transit, such as seatbelt buckles and door handles, using hand sanitizer or wipes.

Premium Airport Lounges Not Germ-Free

Dr. Detwiler also pointed out that opting for premium travel experiences offers limited protection from germs. While airport lounges may provide a more tranquil environment, they are not exempt from contamination risks, particularly at shared food stations and on frequently touched surfaces.

He suggests avoiding self-service buffets in lounges and choosing pre-packaged or made-to-order food options instead. Furthermore, disinfecting tables and seating areas prior to eating is advisable.

Airport lounge restrooms and shower facilities are also potential germ hotspots. Dr. Detwiler recommends using a napkin or paper towel to handle bathroom door handles and faucet controls as a precautionary measure.
