Suns owner Mat Ishbia rips 'disrespectful' Stephen A. Smith and claims ESPN host isn't taken 'seriously'

Importance Score: 55 / 100 🔵

NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith, a prominent voice on ESPN’s First Take and through his podcast, reaches a vast audience. His commentary extends to extensive basketball coverage and regular appearances on various shows. Despite his widespread influence and lucrative contract with ESPN, it’s clear that Phoenix Suns proprietor Mat Ishbia is not an admirer.

Suns Owner Ishbia Downplays Stephen A. Smith’s Commentary

“Stephen A. Smith?” the wealthy mortgage executive and former Michigan State guard queried reporters. “I don’t consider his opinions valid, and frankly, I doubt many others do.”

Ishbia’s remarks on Thursday followed the culmination of what he termed a “disappointing season.” The Phoenix Suns concluded with a 36-46 record, leading to the dismissal of coach Mike Budenholzer earlier in the week. Consequently, despite possessing a roster featuring basketball stars Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, Ishbia is tasked with appointing the team’s fourth head coach in as many seasons.

Smith’s “Worst Owner” Criticism

Smith recently criticized Ishbia regarding the Phoenix Suns’ current state. Although Ishbia, 45, acquired the franchise in 2022, the ESPN personality characterized his ownership as a historical misstep.

“Mat Ishbia must grasp that he is currently approaching recognition as the most inadequate owner in basketball history,” Smith asserted in a recent broadcast.

Ishbia spoke following what he described as a “disappointing season”

Ishbia alleges few value Smith’s opinions, despite ESPN’s substantial investment in his commentary.

This remark grouped Ishbia with figures like Donald Sterling, famously compelled to divest from the Los Angeles Clippers due to racist remarks, and Robert Sarver, whose own controversies prompted him to sell the Suns to Ishbia.

Ishbia Defends Record, Criticizes Smith’s Past Takes

On Thursday, Ishbia referenced Smith’s prior criticism of current league luminaries before redirecting attention to his escalating dispute with the sports pundit.

“His statements regarding Kevin Durant were inaccurate and discourteous,” Ishbia stated. “His pronouncements about LeBron James were similarly disrespectful and unsuitable. Having said that, I’m not convinced Stephen A. genuinely believes his own assertions.”

“I believe he is performing for his audience, he’s on air, and… I anticipate an apology from him for associating my name with individuals expelled from or no longer affiliated with the league.”

Smith to Respond to Ishbia’s Remarks

Unsurprisingly, Smith is expected to capitalize on this controversy. The television and podcast host is preparing his response across his media platforms.

Ishbia maintains that Suns guard Devin Booker remains a cornerstone “franchise” player.

“I anticipate addressing this on @FirstTake tomorrow morning,” Smith posted to his extensive X following. “I appreciate how individuals deliberately misinterpret to sidestep the core issue… my actual point. But it’s acceptable! I eagerly anticipate providing clarification. My pleasure. See you all in the morning!”

Suns Aim for Turnaround

Ishbia has initiated efforts to improve fan relations by decreasing concession costs, but acknowledges, “We must make the correct next [coaching] appointment.”

“I am committed to fielding a team that elicits pride,” Ishbia asserted. “It must embody an identity – a Phoenix-like identity. Characterized by resilience, resolve, strong work ethic, dedication, and enjoyment. We have lacked that essence.”

The team may consider trading Durant this offseason as he approaches 37, although Ishbia publicly supports Booker, who at 28, has completed a decade in the NBA.

“He is the franchise cornerstone, he has achieved remarkable feats,” Ishbia affirmed. “I consult with him, and our visions are closely aligned. His objective and mine are very similar – to secure a championship for Phoenix.”
