Ukrainian Officials Convene in Paris to Advocate for Stronger International Support Amidst Ongoing Conflict

Senior Ukrainian government figures traveled to Paris on Thursday for an unannounced visit, coinciding with a gathering of European diplomats aiming to present Kyiv’s position to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Steve Witkoff, an envoy representing President Donald Trump.

Diplomatic Efforts to Address U.S.-Russia Relations and Ukraine War

This high-level diplomatic engagement highlights escalating European apprehension regarding the U.S. administration’s recent approaches towards Moscow. This concern arises after President Trump’s attempts to broker a ceasefire in the protracted Russia-Ukraine conflict have thus far proven unsuccessful. It is understood that the U.S. officials were also scheduled to deliberate on nuclear discussions with Iran during their Paris visit.

Trump’s Stance on the Ukraine Conflict

President Trump has consistently expressed his objective to swiftly resolve the conflict in Ukraine. He has conveyed discontent with both Moscow and Kyiv, even as his administration has progressively adopted rhetoric that aligns more closely with the Russian perspective on the situation.

Last month, Ukraine consented to a ceasefire proposition from President Trump, which was subsequently rejected by Russia. Currently, both sides have only agreed to limitations on attacks targeting energy infrastructure and naval assets, with mutual accusations of violations persisting.

Kyiv Seeks Stricter U.S. Approach Towards Russia

Kyiv, along with its European allies, attributes the rejection of Trump’s ceasefire proposal to Moscow and seeks to convince Washington to adopt a firmer stance. Their advocacy has intensified following a recent Russian attack in Sumy that resulted in civilian casualties, including Ukrainian Orthodox worshippers.

“I’m just trying to get it stopped so that we can save a lot of lives,” President Trump stated regarding the war on Sunday.

Unscheduled Ukrainian Delegation Arrival in Paris

The arrival of the Ukrainian delegation in Paris was not publicly disclosed prior to what Washington had announced as planned discussions between Rubio, Witkoff, and French counterparts.

Ukrainian Delegation Composition and Meeting Objectives

Andriy Yermak, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, indicated that the delegation he headed, which included Ukraine’s foreign minister and defense minister, was slated to meet with U.S., French, British, and German representatives. He did not confirm explicitly whether meetings with Rubio or Witkoff were scheduled.

“We are addressing critical matters concerning the security of Ukraine and the broader European continent,” Yermak communicated via X.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha elaborated, stating, “The discussions will center on methods to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire, the potential deployment of a multinational military force to ensure enduring peace, further advancements in Ukraine’s security framework, and guaranteeing our nation’s security.”

European Diplomatic Presence in Paris

Jens Ploetner, foreign policy advisor to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, is also participating in the Paris meetings.

Iran Nuclear Discussions on the Agenda

Beyond the conflict in Ukraine, U.S. and French officials confirmed that deliberations would extend to Washington’s endeavors to finalize a nuclear agreement with Iran.

Upcoming U.S.-Iran Talks in Rome

Witkoff is scheduled to proceed to Rome for a subsequent round of talks on Saturday with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi concerning Iran’s nuclear program. They previously convened for 45 minutes last Saturday in Oman.

Both parties characterized the prior weekend’s discussions as constructive, while acknowledging that a potential agreement remains a considerable distance away.

Trump’s Warning Regarding Iranian Nuclear Program

President Trump, who withdrew the U.S. from a prior nuclear accord with Iran in 2018 during his initial presidential term, declared on Monday his readiness to conduct airstrikes against Iranian nuclear facilities if a revised agreement is not reached.

Oman Talks Announcement

The United States had not informed European nations about the nuclear discussions held in Oman before President Trump publicly disclosed them.
