Puerto Rico Power Outages: Updates on the Widespread Blackout

Importance Score: 80 / 100 🔴

On Wednesday, April 16, 2025, Puerto Rico experienced extensive power outages, plunging the entire island into darkness. The Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) released a statement emphasizing the precarious state of the island’s electrical grid, noting that “Today’s massive blackout highlights the continued fragility of Puerto Rico’s power grid.” According to the PRFAA, Governor Jenniffer González-Colón immediately gathered agency leaders to guarantee the uninterrupted operation of vital infrastructure and essential services, such as hospitals, from the moment the blackout commenced.

Governor González-Colón provided an update via social media on April 17, 2025, stating, “We continue to report and monitor the provision of reliable electricity service. Today we are sharing updated information regarding the restoration of power across the island. Our monitoring efforts with LUMA Energy persist, with the aim of ensuring all households receive the electricity service they deserve equitably and effectively.”

Earlier, on the day of the power failure, Governor González-Colón also indicated in a post that “Interim Governor Veronica Ferraiuoli and Energy Czar Josué Colón are working diligently alongside the energy sector to resolve the outage affecting a significant number of consumers.”

Amid these widespread disruptions across Puerto Rico, residents are seeking answers regarding the cause of the electrical grid failure and the estimated timeline for complete power restoration throughout the island.

Reasons Behind Puerto Rico’s Power Outages

The Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) attributed the blackout to “a transmission line failure between the Cambalache power plant and the municipality of Manati.” The PRFAA also stated that while the precise cause remains under investigation, “efforts to restore electricity are already underway.”

Current Status of Power Restoration in Puerto Rico

According to the most recent update from the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA), “Over 266 megawatts have been restored to the grid, and the system is expected to continue its gradual recovery throughout the night.”
