NASA’s Gateway lunar outpost is taking shape as the newly arrived HALO module reaches its U.S. destination, marking a significant step in the Artemis program. Photos recently released by NASA showcase the Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO), a crucial component of the planned Gateway space station in lunar orbit, slated for launch in 2027. This module will provide essential living and operational space for astronauts.
HALO Module Arrives in Arizona
Earlier this month, NASA unveiled photographs documenting the arrival of the HALO module, designed for the Gateway, a compact space station intended for lunar orbit by 2027.
The Habitation and Logistics Outpost, or HALO, will function as a habitable and operational environment for astronauts stationed on Gateway.
The HALO module was transported from Turin, Italy—where it was manufactured by Thales Alenia Space—to the United States via cargo aircraft. On April 1st, the aircraft touched down at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in Mesa, Arizona.
Visualizing the Lunar Module’s Size
The recently distributed images offer a clear perspective on the dimensions of the lunar module. It occupies a significant portion of the cargo plane’s capacious interior.

From the airport, the HALO module was transported to Northrop Grumman’s integration and testing center in Gilbert, Arizona. Currently, it is undergoing final preparations at this facility. Northrop Grumman is a key contractor involved in NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to further lunar exploration and relies on Gateway as a critical infrastructural element.
Gateway’s Role in Mars Missions
NASA has stated that the Gateway space station is crucial for “charting a course of scientific exploration leading to the initial crewed expeditions to Mars.” These Mars missions are planned after NASA establishes a sustained human presence on the Moon, a primary objective of the Artemis initiative.
Key Functions of the HALO Module
NASA designates the HALO module as a “core component” of Gateway. Beyond astronaut accommodation, the module will deliver diverse functionalities, including:
- Command and control systems
- Power distribution
- Communication and tracking capabilities
- Support for research initiatives with internal and external science payloads
Path to Launch
Following the completion of Northrop Grumman’s work on HALO, the module will be transported to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. There, it is scheduled to be integrated with Gateway’s Power and Propulsion Element before its anticipated launch in 2027 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
