Full House star Dave Coulier recently shared his experiences overcoming cancer chemotherapy treatments and recounted a chilling episode where a common cold nearly became fatal. The actor, recognized for his role as Joey Gladstone on the hit sitcom, disclosed the details of his cancer battle and the unexpected health scare during a recent podcast appearance.
Dave Coulier’s Cancer Journey
Best known for his comedic portrayal of Joey Gladstone on the popular 80s and 90s television show Full House, and his extensive voice work in animation, Dave Coulier, 65, revealed his diagnosis of Stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma in October. He promptly began chemotherapy to combat the disease.
In November, Coulier described his condition as ‘very aggressive,’ but by late March, he joyfully announced he was cancer-free. He recently joined his Full House and Fuller House colleagues, Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber, on their podcast, How Rude, Tanneritos, to discuss his health ordeal.
A Cold Turns Critical Post-Chemo
Coulier revealed that in the three-week period between his final chemotherapy session and receiving the all-clear, he contracted a cold that almost resulted in his death.

The 65-year-old comedian first came into prominence from playing comical cut-up Joey Gladstone on the 80s/90s sitcom, along with a number of animated voice roles.
‘My blood counts were critically low following chemo. Red blood cell levels plummet after treatment, and all your levels—white blood cells, everything—your immune system essentially collapses. I caught a cold during that last chemotherapy treatment,’ Coulier explained.
Due to the severity of the cold, the comedian was confined to the hospital for ten days. He admitted to initially misattributing his symptoms, saying, ‘I attributed it to the expected cumulative effects of chemotherapy, rather than recognizing I had a cold that my compromised immune system couldn’t fight off.’
Wife’s Prompt Action Saves the Day
Coulier credited his wife, Melissa Bring, for urging him to seek medical attention when he hesitated.
‘I ended up hospitalized for four days, receiving intravenous antibiotics to bring down my fever. The medical team admitted, “We’re uncertain about the cause,”‘ he recounted.
Doctors discovered concerning proteins that potentially indicated an impending ‘massive heart attack,’ leading to recommendations for CAT scans and ultrasounds.
‘As my immune system began to recover, I started to improve. On the fifth day, they finally declared, “Your fever is gone, you can go home,”‘ he stated.
“However,” Coulier added, relating the gravity of the situation, ‘they cautioned me that had I delayed seeking treatment for another 48 hours, they ‘could have lost’ me.’
‘My blood levels were so low because after chemo treatment, red blood cells dive. All your levels, your white blood cells, everything, just your immune system just kind of crashes. And so I caught a cold during that last chemo treatment,’ Coulier said

Overwhelmed by Love and Support
‘The response was an immediate outpouring of, “I will be there. Just say when, and we’ll be there. We know you’re in excellent hands with Melissa, but what can we do?”‘ he recounted.
Coulier, who has also contributed to popular shows like Robot Chicken, How I Met Your Mother, and It’s Garry Shandling’s Show, reflected on the close bond with his former castmates: ‘The love we share for each other is truly overwhelming.’
