Cable Car Plunge Near Naples Results in Fatalities

A tragic incident unfolded near Naples, in southern Italy, as a cable car plummeted to the ground, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and leaving one person with critical injuries. Mountain rescue teams and firefighters confirmed the devastating accident, which occurred on Thursday.

Location of the Incident

The cable car crash took place at Monte Faito, a mountain summit situated approximately 45 kilometers (28 miles) southeast of Naples. This popular destination is frequented by tourists and locals alike.

Official Statement and Initial Reports

Umberto De Gregorio, the chairman of EAV, the public transportation company operating the cable car service, described the event as a “tragedy” in a social media post. Initial media reports from Italy suggest a cable supporting the cabin may have broken, contributing to the catastrophic failure.

Rescue Operation for Stranded Passengers

In a separate cabin, sixteen passengers found themselves stranded mid-air near the base of the mountain when the incident occurred. Emergency services successfully evacuated all sixteen individuals using harnesses in a delicate operation. Footage broadcast by RAI public television and other news outlets documented the rescue efforts.

Challenges Faced by Emergency Responders

Vincenzo De Luca, the governor of the Campania region encompassing Naples, informed RAI that rescue operations were complicated by dense fog and strong winds in the mountainous area. These adverse weather conditions hampered efforts on site.
