A devastating cable car accident near Naples in southern Italy has resulted in the tragic deaths of four individuals. Emergency services reported that a cabin on Mount Faito plummeted to the ground, prompting a large-scale rescue operation.
Fatal Cable Car Plunge at Mount Faito
The incident occurred when a cable car cabin descended rapidly to the ground on Mount Faito, close to the city of Naples. Alongside the four fatalities, one person sustained critical injuries in the cable car crash. Medical officials confirmed the critically injured individual was airlifted to a hospital for urgent treatment.
Possible Cable Failure Under Investigation
Initial reports from Italian news agencies indicate that a cable supporting one of the cabins higher on the mountain may have fractured. This potential cable snap reportedly occurred as the cable car traversed a section of the valley, leading to the catastrophic event.
Vincenzo De Luca, the president of the Campania region, stated that all victims of the tragic cable car accident were tourists.
Challenging Rescue Conditions
Rescue efforts faced significant challenges due to adverse weather conditions. Thick fog, strong winds, and persistent rain hampered the ability of emergency responders to reach the remote, high-altitude location of the cable car crash.

Earlier Incident on the Same Line
Earlier on the same Thursday, the cable car line experienced a separate disruption. Italian media detailed how another cabin became stranded further down the valley, necessitating a rescue operation to evacuate over a dozen passengers.
Eyewitness footage depicted rescue personnel using harnesses to winch passengers to safety during this earlier incident.
Traction Cable Suspected as Cause
The mayor of Castellammare di Stabia, the town where the Mount Faito cable car is located, suggested that a snapped traction cable is believed to be the primary cause of the fatal accident.
He explained to reporters that while “the downstream emergency brake engaged successfully, the brake on the cabin ascending towards the summit evidently did not function.”
The mayor further stated that regular safety inspections and maintenance checks were routinely performed on the cable car infrastructure.
EAV, the public transport company responsible for operating the cable car service, acknowledged the incident as “a tragedy” in a public statement released via social media.
