Bobby Brown Criticizes Britney Spears’ Rendition of “My Prerogative”

Grammy Award-winning artist Bobby Brown has voiced his critical opinion on Britney Spears’ cover of his hit song “My Prerogative.” In a recent interview, Brown expressed his disapproval of Spears’ 2004 rendition of the 1988 track, despite having granted permission for the cover. The commentary comes two decades after Spears, in collaboration with Brown’s original co-writer Teddy Riley, released her version of the iconic song.

Brown’s Candid Remarks on “Club Shay Shay”

Speaking with Shannon Sharpe on the April 16 episode of the Club Shay Shay podcast, Bobby Brown did not hold back his feelings regarding Spears’ interpretation. “Britney Spears butchered ‘My Prerogative,'” Brown stated plainly. He acknowledged Teddy Riley’s involvement in the production, but maintained his stance, adding, “Teddy Riley produced it, but that was a butchering. I couldn’t take it.”

Regrets Over Granting Permission

The New Edition alumnus admitted to initially clearing the track for Spears due to her pop star status. “I cleared it only because it was Britney Spears,” he explained. He further indicated that Teddy Riley’s participation in Spears’ version provided a sense of security in his decision at the time.

Broader Critique of Song Covers

Brown’s discontent extends beyond just Spears’ cover of “My Prerogative.” The singer suggested a wider dissatisfaction with cover versions of his musical catalog. “I don’t think they really did justice to any of the samples that they have done to my songs,” he remarked, indicating a general sentiment that his original work has not been adequately honored by subsequent interpretations.

Britney Spears’ Team Yet to Respond

As of now, representatives for Britney Spears have not publicly responded to Brown’s comments. E! News reportedly contacted Spears’ team for comment but has not received a reply.
