Apple Issues Urgent iPhone Software Update to Patch Security Flaws
Apple has launched a new iOS software update for iPhone users to address two security vulnerabilities. iPhone owners are urged to immediately update their devices to iOS 18.4.1. The update is available for iPhone models released from 2018 onwards, specifically iPhone XR, XS, and later models. Users can access the update by navigating to the Settings app and checking for software updates.
iOS 18.4.1 Addresses Critical Security Vulnerabilities
While iOS 18 represents the current iteration of iPhone operating system, Apple routinely releases updates to rectify security flaws that could potentially expose users to risks. The latest update, iOS 18.4.1, resolves two vulnerabilities that Apple indicates might have been exploited in highly sophisticated attacks.
One security bug impacts the Core Audio framework, a component that facilitates audio device connectivity. The other pertains to RPAC, a security feature designed to protect iPhones against memory corruption.
Apple acknowledged reports indicating that both vulnerabilities may have been actively exploited in “extremely sophisticated attacks targeting specific individuals on iOS,” as detailed in the release notes for iOS 18.4.1.
Although the likelihood of becoming a target of such complex attacks is low for most users, these flaws could allow malicious actors to gain unauthorized access to devices and sensitive personal information. Therefore, installing this latest security update is strongly recommended, aligning with the best practices for all iOS security updates.

Expert Recommends Immediate Update to iOS 18.4.1
According to Adam Boynton, Senior Security Strategy Manager EMEIA at Jamf, a security firm, “With the security fixes in iOS 18.4.1 addressing two zero-day vulnerabilities, it is essential that all users immediately update their Apple devices.”
Boynton highlighted that “Notably, in this release, Apple addressed an actively exploited CoreMedia flaw that could have permitted malicious code execution through the processing of a media file. Apple has mitigated this vulnerability by implementing improved bounds checking.”
Details on the Resolved Vulnerabilities
This software update follows the release of iOS 18.4 on March 31, which introduced new emojis and other features.
Boynton further elaborated on the update, stating, “The iOS update also resolves a bug in RRAC that allows an attacker to bypass Pointer Authentication. Pointer Authentication is a security mechanism designed to resist memory disclosure attacks—bypassing it grants an attacker the opportunity to launch attacks and access parts of the device’s memory.”
Limited Scope of Exploitation, Universal Need for Update
“The fact that these two vulnerabilities are extremely sophisticated to exploit explains why Apple has only observed attacks against specific, targeted individuals. However, the limited scope of these attacks should not deter users from updating their devices promptly,” Boynton concluded.
