Major Zoom Outage Disrupts Video Conferencing and Website Access

A significant Zoom outage impacted users this afternoon, preventing connections to video conferences and causing inaccessibility to the website. Independent monitoring by Cisco’s ThousandEyes indicated that site connectivity ceased around 2:40 PM Eastern Time (ET). Service was substantially restored approximately two hours later, resolving the widespread disruption for the popular video conferencing platform.

Widespread User Impact Reported

Numerous reports of the service disruption emerged across social media platforms, notably X, where users described encountering “Unable to Connect” error notifications when attempting to join scheduled online meetings. Other users reported a complete inability to log in to the service. Furthermore, the main Zoom website suffered complete downtime, displaying a 502 Bad Gateway error message, indicating a server issue. Initial indications suggested that even the company’s press email system was also non-functional during the outage.

Domain Registry Issue Identified and Resolved

Information from a Reddit post suggested the root cause of the outage was related to a domain registry problem. This issue was reportedly resolved by 4:12 PM ET. However, a brief delay was anticipated before full service restoration for all users, as Domain Name System (DNS) servers globally needed time to update and propagate the corrected domain information, ensuring consistent connectivity for all Zoom users.

Service Restoration and User Communication

Zoom communicated the restoration of services via a post on X around 5:00 PM ET. The company acknowledged the earlier outage and thanked users for their patience. Zoom stated, “Service has now been restored after the earlier outage, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding.”

Updated: April 16th: Zoom has confirmed the complete restoration of services following the afternoon’s disruption.
