Texas High School Shooting: Student Charged After Rampage at Wilmer Hutchins High School

A teenage suspect has been charged in connection to a Tuesday shooting at a Texas high school after allegedly being granted entry by another student, according to an arrest affidavit. The incident unfolded at Wilmer Hutchins High School in Dallas, leaving five students injured.

Details Emerge in Dallas School Shooting Incident

Tracy Haynes Jr., 17, is facing charges of aggravated assault mass shooting for reportedly injuring five students during the rampage at Wilmer Hutchins High School in Dallas.

Surveillance footage reviewed by CBS News reportedly captured the moment Haynes entered the school building. An affidavit states that he was allowed access by a student through an ‘unsecured door’ shortly after 1 p.m.

According to the affidavit, Haynes then approached a student and appeared to shoot at them at close range. Five students, ranging in age from 15 to 18, sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals.

Suspect in Custody, Bond Set

The suspect reportedly surrendered to authorities later on Tuesday and was booked into the Dallas County Jail. He is currently being held on a $600,000 bond.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the school at 1:06 p.m., according to Dallas Fire-Rescue personnel. Authorities reportedly declared the active shooter threat resolved by 1:45 p.m. Aerial footage showed a significant police presence in the vicinity of the school.

Possible Motive: Dispute Over Dice Game

An 11th-grade student informed NBC DFW that the shooting may have stemmed from a dispute regarding a dice game.

‘They said that they were playing a dice game, I guess that’s what it was over, I guess he lost his money, the boy that was shooting,’ the student stated.

Eyewitness Accounts Detail Chaos and Fear

Another student recounted the moments during and after the gunfire erupted.

‘We were in class and I saw him walk by and then two seconds later I heard like six shots, and the teacher ran to the door and closed it and told us to hide in the corner.’

The student explained that the gunshots were particularly loud as she was seated at the front of the classroom.

‘Everybody just started running and I was like “was that a gunshot?” and this girl next to me she started falling down,’ she added.

She also noted that the school’s metal detectors were operational that day, raising questions regarding how the weapon was brought onto school grounds.

Disturbing images circulated showing students fleeing the campus onto a nearby road and across the school’s field toward the Wilmer-Hutchins Eagle Stadium.

By 1:45 p.m. local time, officials stated that the active shooter situation was over, although aerial news footage continued to show a large number of police vehicles surrounding the school.

A senior student reported being in close proximity to the shooting, telling NBC DFW that she was approximately seven feet away when the shots were fired.

‘I was really scared and I was panicking really bad. It was bad, I was really afraid,’ she stated.

‘I was actually in the cafeteria getting my lunch and I thought maybe it was some balloons popping or something from my airpods and then I saw a whole lot of kids running the opposite way.’

Parent Expresses Concerns Over Repeated Incidents

LaTara Dobbin, the mother of a freshman student, said her son escaped through a classroom window when the shooting began and fled to a nearby elementary school.

‘This is going on too much at this school. Last year my oldest son was a senior here, and there was a shooting. Now he’s here with same thing going on. It’s ridiculous,’ Dobbin expressed.

A student was also injured in a shooting at the same school last year, which occurred in a classroom.

School Closure and Support Services

Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde held a press conference shortly after 5 p.m., confirming that all students had been reunited with their families.

She announced that school would be canceled for the remainder of the week and that mental health counselors would be available for students and staff.

‘You don’t ever just get used to this and I’m very aware of that,’ Elizalde stated. ‘It certainly weighs very heavy on my heart. But I can’t begin to imagine, as a parent myself, I’m trying to put myself in those shoes.’
