Suzie Fletcher of The Repair Shop Credits Show with Healing During Difficult Times

The Repair Shop‘s Suzie Fletcher, a beloved member of the BBC show, has openly discussed how she flourishes when confronted with the restoration challenges presented on the program. The expert saddle maker revealed that her involvement in the popular series originated from her brother, Steve Fletcher, the show’s resident clock specialist, who initially suggested her for the role.

Finding Solace on The Repair Shop

Fletcher explained that The Repair Shop became a crucial support system during an exceptionally challenging period in her life. Returning to the UK following the loss of her husband, she found solace and purpose in her work on the show, attributing her initial decision to relocate to the United States to their relationship.

In an interview with Horse&Hound, Fletcher recounted her move to America in the 1990s, stating, “I went to the USA in the 1990s as a master saddle maker – I only intended to stay for a few years but I met a fella and got married.”

She further elaborated on her brother’s role in her casting, “My brother Steve, who is the clockmaker on The Repair Shop, put my name forward for the job when I was moving back from America.”

Embracing Challenges and Promoting Craftsmanship

Addressing the nature of her work on the show and the restoration tasks she undertakes, Suzie commented, “Problem-solving is something that really excites me, which is why I appreciate the intricate problems that come my way on the show.”

She wrote, “Being part of The Repair Shop has facilitated deep inner healing. Applying my expertise in such a constructive manner has instilled both happiness and self-assurance.”

Highlighting the supportive atmosphere on set, Suzie added, “Whenever I’ve felt anxious or encountered an obstacle, the immediate response from the team has always been ‘How can we assist? What support do you require?’ This completely transforms the dynamic.”

Personal Trauma and Finding Support

While Fletcher has endured significant emotional distress, including the grief of loss, she has also faced emotional anguish stemming from a complex and difficult relationship with her late husband, Rob.

Sharing a harrowing experience in The Mail, she recounted a particularly violent incident: “That’s when he got me with his forearm under my throat…I genuinely believed I was going to die. He was choking me and was easily capable of killing me. I’m not sure why, but he eventually released me.”

“I was deeply traumatized. I had always believed that it could never happen to me. Not that. He would never intentionally hurt me. I then understood what my husband was capable of.”

Reflecting on the therapeutic influence of The Repair Shop, she concluded, “Steve, Jay, the team of experts, the camera personnel, the producers, the directors, and the behind-the-scenes staff have consistently shown kindness and faith in my abilities.”
